Their top 10 of their top 50 bbq joint list is questionable, too. So, there.

Weird that no one ever judged Arkansas for jumping to a new conference. Or Missouri. Or A&M. Or pretty much anyone else, except for...

"What if Texas had done the right thing?"

There's a crapload of questionable assumptions and just a tad of misplaced bitterness behind that line.

How about: "What if the Big XII had been proactive in promoting all of its members interests?", or "What if Tom Osbourne wasn't a butthurt, resentful man?", or "What if Colorado wasn't delusional?".

There's a ton of excrement other than the Longhorn Network leading the Big XII to where it is today.

Every Big 12 football fan is familiar with the Longhorn Network today, but what if the University of Texas had partnered with a historic in-state rival to form a joint network dedicated to those two programs? The wheels were once in motion for that to happen, according to former longtime Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds.

Recently, Dodds recalled how discussions were once had between him and then-Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne about two schools joining forces to launch a network dedicated to coverage of Longhorn and Aggie athletics. But while two different networks were on board for the concept, the offer was ultimately turned down by A&M, according to Dodds.

"That started in one of our staff meetings about how we needed to get some exposure for sports other than football and basketball," Dodds said during a recent appearance on The Austin American Statesman's "On Second Thought" podcast with Kirk Bohls and Cedric Golden. "We talked about how we could do that with television, and we talked about a network. We figured that it would cost us a lot of money to do it. I talked to Bill about the possibility of putting the two universities together and forming a statewide network ... then we talked to FOX about it, and they offered us $3 million a year plus all the expenses. That was huge. Then ESPN comes in and offers an average of $15 million per year for 20 years."But Bill had turned us down on it. Bill didn't want to do that. I don't know if it worked out -- if it would have been a good deal or a bad deal. But we did make the offer, and (Texas A&M) did refuse it."

Bingo. That article is just like the MSM (Uh oh. dukesteer, did you really write that?), tell a lie long enough and it becomes accepted as the truth.

But we should probably be proud. We “Are” the Jones, and apparently the jealousy extends to the Texas Monthly staff. Who knew?

Not that I know of; if I do, he didn't leave much of an impression.

Don't know why anyone gives a rat's *** or would pay attention to anything he thinks. What qualifies him to critique? Easiest thing in the world to be is a critic, and The University of Texas is a huge target that's hard to miss.

TM = BM. I had high hopes for that rag years ago but it is nothing more than hi gloss advertisements interrupted periodically by a semi-relevant paragraph. If it weren't for the hi gloss it would at least have relevance as toilet paper in a 3rd world country. When I was in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, Time magazine was useful in the latrine. Texas Monthly doesn't even serve THAT useful purpose.

I’m not a fan of the SEC or the SEC move, but I get the financial, tv, and recruiting reasons for it. Personally, I liked the PAC—until this week when USC and UCLA jumped ship…. There’s simply nothing out there for our football program anymore—except for some 4 and 5 star recruits to cherry pick.

I like the BIG 10 better than the SEC, but many of their fans are even more boorish than SEC fans, downright hostile and rude, and even violent. Basically, they’re a more intelligent lot of a$$holes than SEC fans, and a lot more hostile towards visitors. It doesn’t help that their premier program is Ohio State. And (aside from the notable exception of Wisconsin) they don’t tailgate on par with the SEC.

This is classic Dodds here. He provides pieces of accurate information in a manner that leads the listener to form the wrong conclusion. In this instance, he discusses the Lonestar Network and the LHN in such a way to make the listener believe A&M turned down a share of $300 million dollars.

The Lonestar Network was proposed by Dodds in 2007. A&M brass ran the numbers and determined there wasn't enough inventory for the network to be attractive to media partners. The original plan called for both schools to pay all startup costs which would run into the tens of millions of dollars.

Fast forward a couple years and Dodds has been working with Larry Scott to kill the Big12. Neither FOX nor ESPN wants to deal with the financial ramifications of massive realignment so they both make LHN offers. ESPN **REALLY** doesn't wan't UT joining the PAC as it's a FOX property so they make an offer no AD could refuse.

So, yes, the Lonestar Network was declined by A&M. The reason was the startup costs, no distributor on board, and the lack of inventory pretty much ensured the network wouldn't be able to turn a profit. The LHN is said to have lost close to $50 million dollars in its first 5 years of existence. It took years to get distribution up to snuff. It's 10 years old and is still in the red for it's existence. Meanwhile, it has been such a boon for UT that they are willing to let it go to follow A&M's footsteps into the SEC.

The reason was aggy brass couldn't see the vision. Deloss saw the vision and made it happen.

The operating losses and startup costs were absorbed by ABC. True, the Aggie "brass" couldn't understand the financials back in 05/07, but why focus on the operating loss for poor little ABC while you're running to the bank to deposit $15 million every year.

Only thought that comes to mind is that the Aggies thought ABC was too financially unstable to absorb the operating losses of the LHN and their checks might bounce. Even Claytie could have understood this one.

Even Red "We Got a Half-Gimp QB" McCombs would understand that if ABC had been willing to absorb the operating costs on 05/07, UT would have been cashing $15 million dollar checks since 2007. But, UT didn't start cashing said checks until 2011.

Which pretty much proves my point that the proposed Lonestar Network did not have a media partner on board for distribution and the startup costs were to be borne by the two schools. Given that the LHN lost $48 million in the first 5 years shows that A&M's projection on the profit potential of the network being grim at best was spot on.

Top it off with the fact that the richest athletic department in the nation has run the numbers and determined dumping the LHN to join the SEC will result in way more money flowing into Belmont's coffers. Something those dumb Aggies saw way back in 2011.

This was at one time a fantastic read and I a loyal subscriber to it, not anymore. I have not bought one save a bbq issue or two in quite sometime.

Sounds like he wants to get the band back together? Nebraska? really....

I agree on the current Top 10 BBQ being suspect.
