Let's not forget about Sonya Morris. She can also play the 2 position. For my peace of mind, I just need to see photos of Sonya on campus and working out with the team.

I'm reserving judgment on who is the better player between Matharu and Gonzales. I've only seen video clips of Gonzales so I don't have enough information to compare the two. Prior to the Matharu news, Gonzales was a luxury. Now, she's a priority.

This video on Instagram from 4 days ago shows Matharu at Vic's home with the rest of the team having a great time. So, that, and her being removed from the roster today tells me that Vic and the rest of the team had to have known about her impending transfer. For all we know, she could have met the July 1 deadline to inform Texas of her request to have her name entered in the transfer portal; at that time, Texas had 48 hours to comply (could have been longer based on the weekend and July 4 holiday).

Matharu is the better player. Offensively and defensively.

You may be right or you may wrong. Time will tell. The comparisons of the two players will only be worth our time if Gonzales commits to Texas.

"Better" is subjective. And, if you are spending too much on the bench due to foul trouble, then you aren't contributing on the court. Morris averaged 17 ppg to Matharu's 12 pgg, and was First Team All Big East.

Now, if each player played 40 minutes a game every game, then we could make a fair and accurate comparison.

Gonzales is a great player who’s main source of scoring is the dribble drive and I believe she will thrive if she does commit. She can attack the basket really well and finish with both hands. She is also great in transition and plays the passing lanes very well on defense. I do believe she needs to work on her on ball defense a bit more but, she did have surgery a few years ago so that could be a reason for her not going all out. I don’t think we will hurt offensively with Matharu leaving besides her elite shooting but, we will lose a bit of that toughness factor.

"Better" may be subjective, but when it comes to a particular team/system it isn't. When you look at Matharu's shooting percentages from the three point line on a team in which she was really the only consistent threat that most teams had to really worry about. And her on ball defense, which is a staple in Vic's defensive system.

For this team she's certainly the better player than Gonzalez. Which is what I responded to. Not to mention the fact that she had familiarity with the system, which neither Gonzales nor Morris has.

I'll just repeat that I love Matharu. As I stated before, having her and Rori on the court together reminded me of those super quick athletic Louisiana Tech backcourts who could control a game.

Vic often talked about how the opponents hated having Rori guard their PG baseline to baseline. He might have said similar things about Matharu's defense, but I'm not for sure; I know he hated it when she picked up defensive fouls that could have been avoided using better judgement.

Offensively, Matharu is a better 3PT shooter by far. Gonzales is the better in almost every other category. She averaged 10MPG more than Matharu this past season and had less turnovers while being the point guard. She shot 16% better from the free throw line and still has a higher FG% while shooting so much lower from 3. Even if you average the minutes equally she is better in almost every statistical category.

Gonzales passes the eye test more than Matharu as well. When you watch her she commands your attention; she is almost always the best player on the court. She is the conference player of the year for a reason. I believe she also has 2 years of eligibility left against 1 for Matharu.

Losing Matharu hurts a lot and we may struggle from the 3 this season, but if we get Gonzales it is a trade I think will pay off.

Sorry, I thought it was about Morris. I'd already quote-replied to someone else who stated Gonzales was not as good as Matharu.

I don't believe Vic brings in Morris and Gonzles (hopefully) if he doesn't believe they fit his system. Morris only has one season remaining, so I have confidence in what he expects of her.

Again, if you find yourself on the bench due to foul trouble, you aren't contributing. If Morris and Gonzales (if she comes) spend more minutes on the court than Matharu did, I'm confident they'll score more than Matharu's 12 ppg.

Now I worry about defending teams that have a couple of very quick, athletic guards.

Good point! While I thought that, at times, Vic was a little harder on Matharu than maybe some others, it's only because he was trying to get through to her about decision-making, turnovers, and silly fouls. Those are all things that should be improved by your junior season. I'm not criticizing Matharu because I really liked the kid...but Vic knows what he's doing with player development. At the end of the day, players need to do what is in their best interest because winning programs surely will. I wish her the best and we move on.

It not just about ppg. Matharu's ability to shoot from the three point line opens things up for everyone else on the floor. It's gives the other guards space to create and allows post players to operate down low without the lane being clogged. And as you mentioned, there's no guarantee that Gonzalez even comes.

That doesn't concern me as much now that we have a couple of legit shot-blockers in the paint (Jones and Faye).

That's s valid concern. Joanne Allen-Taylor is the bigger defensive loss over Matharu; losing them both is where we are today, unfortunately.

Conversely, Stanford's bigger guards really contained Matharu and were able to post her up in the Elite 8 game much better than in the November game.

Baylor has Andrews and Ja'mee Asberry. OU has Taylor Morrison and now Ana Llanusa. Iowa State has Ashley Joens. Those are my main worries defensively, even before Matharu left. KSU has the taller, lankier guards.

You make a valid point, but we're still not exactly what I'd call cement feet with Harmon, Hunter, and Morris.

And, it's not about making 3-point shots if your best shooter is on the bench due to foul trouble. First and foremost, a player has to make it on to the court, and stay out of foul trouble in order to see maximum court minutes and contribute offensively.

I'm very sad to see this. Not only will Matharu be missed on the basketball court, but her facial expressions and interactions with Vic at the post-game press conferences were a hoot!

Agreed, and even when she wasn’t on the court because of foul trouble it was because of her poor defense at times. Only 21 minutes per game for your leading scorer says a lot.

Joanne was not a great long range shooter fyi. Matharu was our best and when she was in the floor, it did spread the defense. Increasing the number of threats from 3 point range is very important. Morris is excellent fro 3=point land, but losing Matharu certainly hurts. She’s an outstanding player. I really hate this. So glad Hunter stayed….

Helpful to remember that players are asked to display/use certain skill-sets based on team need most of the time, not necessarily talent. That being said, it is impossible to ACCURATELY evaluate who would be better player for this team without actually seeing them both on THIS team.

Always beneficial to have a sniper, she will be missed greatly.

Hoping the presence of Morris and the continued development of Hunter will make losing Matharu a two-for-one on snipers.

She was on the court long enough to be one of the leading scores and the main focal point of the opposing team defending the 3. And again, experience playing in a system is also very important.

Let's not try to down play or minimize her importance or impact to the team because she's no longer on the team.

We KNEW what Matharu was bringing to the table. Now we have to guess as to what Morris or some other player, who will have to learn a totally deferent system can do. That game against Uconn is mighty early in the season.

We've been discussing Matharu's tendency to get into foul trouble and play limited minutes (didn't enter the game in Waco until the 7-minute mark in the second quarter) on this board for many months.

Every poster on here wishes she was still on the team, but her playing time was limited last year for different reasons. Like you said, we all know what she brings to the table, and that includes a tendency to get into foul trouble.

And she STILL lead the team in scoring. To me that shows just how good she is. And let's not also act as if many of those same folks on this board including myself, weren't scratching our heads asking why Vic wasn't playing Matharu or bringing her in late during games when it was obvious the team needed her scoring even when she wasn't in foul trouble.

I think that Morris can impact the game in areas that Matharu didn't because of her lack of height such as rebounding and defending bigger guards while also being a great scorer herself. But having to replace your experienced leading scorer who was also your best shooter is huge.
