    Draft is Sunday-Tuesday 7/17-7/19.

Figured I would start a thread dedicated to this since it's fairly crucial to next season. There are several players that may elect to return instead of going MLB, I think most of the ones eligible will actually go pro but maybe there are some surprises and we surely hope so. All the updates can fall under this thread, I'll do my best to update as it becomes clear which ones have committed to going pro or come back.

Likely underclassmen losses to the draft:

Pete Hansen, LHP, 97th pick (3rd rd) St. Louis SIGNED
Trey Faltine, SS, 213th pick (7th rd) Cincinnati Reds SIGNED
Silas Ardoin, C., 107th pick, Baltimore, signed
Douglas Hodo, OF, 167th pick (6th rd) Baltimore SIGNED
    Eric Kennedy, UT
Jared Southard, 358 pick (12th rd) Angels SIGNED

Tanner Witt, P - all indications are that T. Witt will be back but I have seen one projection that he was a high round prospect in spite of the injury.

Strong candidates from the signing class that may go major league route:

Henry Bolte, OF, 56 pick (2nd rd) Oakland A’s SIGNED
Cutter Coffey, UT, RHP - 41 pick to the Boston Red Sox (2nd pick of 2nd rd) SIGNED
    Mathew Porchas, RHP
    Max Beylou, OF
    Jalin Flores, SS
Brenner Cox, P, 111 pick (4th rd) Washington SIGNED

    Players out of eligibility

    Ivan Melendez - 1B - 43 overall pick - Arizona Diamondbacks
    Murphy Stehly 3B, 291st (10th rd) Washington
Skyler Messenger, 3B, 566 pick, (19 rd) Rockies

Tristan Stevens, undrafted free agent, Marlins
Marcus Olivarez, undrafted free agent, Royals, Signed

You are correct and i will include them as they get drafted, I was merely thinking of this as a means of keeping up with who gets drafted and who doesn't and maybe we can somewhat keep up with who may return or actually make it to campus of those that still have eligibility.

So I saw an article that mentioned Southard could go in this draft as well. I know Chop will be sad if that happens. Actually i will be too cause that could be a pretty big hit to the team next year.

For what its worth, if any person gets drafted in the first round, you should go, high school, college doesn't matter, just go.

I think if Hansen doesnt go in the first three rounds, i think he should return. I think he could improve his stock for next year as well as with Woody's tutelage, better prepare him for MLB. For what its worth, I dont think he comes back regardless of draft position but we will see, he could get snubbed.

    He’s our top heat thrower.

For all the potential draftees, it’s largely about how big the signing bonus $$$$$$$$ is. These guys aren’t stupid, they know 4-5 years of minor league life is going to suck balls compared to college life—so it had better be worthwhile $$$$$$$.

Also, for the guys offered decent (but not huge) $$$$, they’ve got to weigh the lifetime value of getting a college degree—as a fall back in case pro ball doesn’t pan out for them.

What nobody wants is to become a washed out divorced minor leaguer in his mid-30s with little or nothing left in his bank account, who ends up working at a car wash, on a crew laying tile, or as the assistant manager at Taco Bell, after he gives up his major league dreams.

If i remember correctly, MLB covers their schooling if they don't make it, i don't remember what the criteria was but I believe school is paid for regardless. I would have to ask one of the guys what their contract included.

There’s some kind of scholarship program I think they can negotiate into their contract. I don’t know if it’s standard. Not sure it pays for all of college, if it’s adjusted for inflation, or what % of ex players actually complete degrees under such program…?

Completing their education (and now rather than possibly 10-12 years down the line) should be a factor for the guys offered decent, but not huge, $$$$$$$.

    fan,

Additional money to finish college has to be included in the contract. I have read one specific contract for one of our former players that did not have the clause. When he finally signed with a competent agent, the contract was immediately rewritten to include the clause. It is not mandatory, but intelligent players understand it.

That sounds about right. It’s been a while since this subject had come up in the right company.

The Rangers Vandy pipeline grows. Last year it was Leiter. Now it’s Rocker.

So far after 1 round plus supplemental, no one from UT nor a recruit but Henry Bolte could go in the second round and I'm guessing we lose him if so.

    Per Prospectslive.com
The Draft ratings (opinion) of UT pitchers, by rank among all players/all positions:

    Hansen - 203
    Morehouse - 274
    Southard - 385
    Nixon - 399
    Tristan - 423

Morehouse throws fast—95mph fastball, and he’s tall with long arms. He came into his own on the mound the 2nd half of last year. Scouts like him. Still, Another example of potential over production, as both Southard and Tristan outperformed him last year in college ball. Hope all our eligible guys come back.

I saw some have Hansen around mid 100's. either way, thats not far off at 203. I'm wondering how the end of the season hurt him myself.

    Bolte
    Belyeu
    Cox

Hope we enroll and play at least 2 out of those 3. Else, better scoop up some more batters in the portal.

Tristan is a fighter with a lot of character. Even if he doesn’t go until the (non-existent) 99th round, I think he’ll work his way up through the minors and at least be a reliever in the big leagues someday.

I was thinking much the same thing, hopefully he keeps the fire and keeps trying to improve.

I'm hoping at least Belyeu and Cox, i think these guys can help next year, I think Bolte is going to get drafted too high. (crossing my fingers though)

3 players drafted in the top 51 picks from OU. 2 pitchers and 1 middle infielder. Thats pretty solid.

Steve Cohen and his Mets got a bargain picking Tidwell out of Tennessee. The announcers at MLB.com are on it. If business and financial smarts translate to baseball management smarts, the Mets will build a dynasty.

Tennessee’s pitching will still be sick next year. And LSU is scooping up loads of talent in the portal.

Yeah. I can’t stand that team, but they were good. They’ve got a good coach too.

Speaking of Tennessee, theyve now had 3 drafted as well in the top 52 picks, but two outfielders and one pitcher, not quite as strong as having two pitchers and a middle infielder like oklahoma. Think they will be ok next year, they also still have Frank.

Skye Messinger gets no love from the ratings folks. He’s not even in the top 600. I bet his glove is equal to any third baseman on their list. And his spectacular batting avg. Yeah, he’s kinda slow on the base pads, but so what for a third baseman. Hope Texas or Houston pick him up in the low rounds for a bargain.

That pitcher is from Bixby, but aren't the other two from Texas, one from Waxahachie?

Correction: I believe that One is from Bixby & one from Norman, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Didn’t Skip Johnson coach for a spell at Navarro or another JC down South of Dallas? That would explain his recruiting prowess around those parts.

Peyton Graham is from Waxahatchie. middle infielder, the two pitchers that were drafted are from Oklahoma.
