on another more positive note Jared Thomas will play for the University.

And with Eric Kennedy not being drafted yet, I wonder if he comes back to get a better draft position after seeing how it worked out for Melendez? and I believe that he can and would. Haven't heard anything from Trey's camp so I'm guessing hes gone but he could do himself a world of good by coming back.

Anyone with any connections to Trey chime in please on what he believes he is going to do.

He’s got a tough decision to make. I hope he’s back for another year or two. 98mph fastballs get the pros excited.

 

I'm happy for all the players who have been drafted and wish them well. Unless Southard fears injury or really hates school, I'd think he could he improve his draft position a lot by coming back for another year. He seemed to be moving in the right direction consistency-wise toward the end of the season. If he showed some control next season to go along with that 98 mph heat the pro scouts would sure enough be excited.

And that’s a wrap for the 2022 draft.

 

They got a bargain. Glad to see Skye M drafted and getting to be in his home state’s franchise. The big Coloradan was a big part of why we made it to Omaha this year. I think his prowess at the plate and in the field will carry over to Minor League, and ultimately Major League ball. His base running speed can’t be fixed, but there’s been plenty of slow third and first basemen who can hit well that stick in the Major Leagues. You don’t normally expect your third baseman to steal many bases…

 

I don’t think it’s tough, he can grow his skill one more year at UT and make possibly a million $ more than he would by going now.

 

I hope he adopts your outlook.
It’s sometimes not easy for a 19 year old to turn down some good $$$$ on the table. Of course, we don’t know if the offer would be sweet enough.

If Southard is back, I could see him as our top closer, or the first reliever out of the pen when the starter has pitched us into a jam. By the late season, he seems to have tamed his control, while still throwing in the (very) high 90s. Good slider too. A very high ceiling guy. Also a great team player who sets up / throws batting practice and does a lot of the unnoticed work, according to a Pierce interview I saw.

 

Kennedy’s bat will be one of our best next year. I’d guess around 0.325+ with around 15 + homers in a full season. Plus, his speed creates opportunities offensively. I bet his nagging injuries dampened the MLB scouts’ enthusiasm for him.

 

Tristan Stevens just signed with the Marlins as an undrafted free agent.

 

I absolutely see Southard in the closer role and locking that down would propel him to lofty heights in the draft.

His Twitter post talks of UT in the past tense and has the Anaheim LA Angels logo.

Jared Southard was a very good player for UT. Best of luck to him. I bet he’ll work his way up through the minors and relieve in the majors in not-too-many years. Reports are that he is not only a great natural talent, but he’s also a very hard worker. Plus, guys who throw 98 mph with decent control don’t grow on trees.

For us, the closer position is now wide open. Some possibilities are:

Sthele - probably who we’ll go with out of the gate next year
DuPlantier (could be a starter…?)
Porchas (a lot to ask of an 18 year old Freshman)
Witt (when he’s fully healed)
Cobb (I like him better as a mid-week starter or even a Sunday starter)
LBJ (I like him better as a setup man)
Harrison (too valuable as the #1 first reliever out of the pen)
Grubbs (if he’s got it)
That new transfer guy from Arkansas
Some other new guy…?

 

Since he has a shot (and not a hope) I cannot be upset with this.

Remember, by the later part of the season, Sthele was pitching quite well--for an inning or two... Leave him in longer and he'd fall apart. He also throws fast and gets strikeouts. Sounds like closer material. LBJ is a high-risk / high-reward potential choice for a closer. He throws real fast, from a down angle as a tall/long-armed pitcher, and gets a lot of strikeouts. But sometimes he lives in the dirt, as in the dirt in front of the plate. Cobb might be a "safe" choice for games where he comes in at the start of the 9th inning without men already on base. Then there's always Harrison--but he adds so much value as the first man off the bench to dig us out of trouble with men already on base. Harrison seems cool and collected mentally on the mound, and handles the big pressure of coming in with men already on base. Some of the incoming Freshmen will simply have to step up in our bullpen.

 

good stuff, I’m really curious who Woody identifies to fill this role. I think we are going to see a pitching staff from top to bottom that looks competent no matter who steps in.

 

And now apparently OF Porter Brown (TCU) has been added to the roster. Now the outfield will be filled. Depending on campbell, I assume he will stay in the outfield even though he can play infield it will be Brown, campbell and Kennedy.

 

Porter Brown batted 0.276, but with 5 homeruns in only 98 at bats (their everyday starters typically had around 210-220 at bats. That would translate to 11 homeruns on the year for an everyday starter--that's some pretty good power. Brown also had a 0.480 slugging %--the 3rd best on TCU's squad last year. While these aren't all-conference numbers, this is the sort of player that would start most places in the conference and will drive in some runs.

Zero errors on the year with 29 po. Also 8 stolen bases in 9 attempts. We have no idea how our batting lineup will perform next year, and we lost an enormous amount of power, so this is a good pickup.
