    Sark is the offensive/QB "guru.
He pulls in the offensive talent.
    Venables is the defensive "guru".
Shouldn't be surprising if he pulls in some defensive talent.

Is Venables terribly easy to dislike like Herman or do I feel this way because he was at OU. Did not feel this way about Bob Stoops or Riley, but I also feel this way about Mike Sttops. Anyway, I think Venables better win early or his personality will kill his recruiting efforts.

Agree that if the D actually shows up this year then we have a different story to tell.

Not sure of the context there, but could be the reason we can't match recruits on offense.

Perhaps the pass rush the Texas OL can't slow down.

I presume he thinks this is somehow funny? He should be pissed like Patterson would be. Your guys either do what you want them to do or its next man up. These comments by PK just embolden how weak he is a DC. Most of those guys are fire eaters and should be. I dont understand the "freelance" crap. That means they didnt do what you wanted and for some reason there were no consequences. I still hope for the best but this was an awful pc for PK and Longhorn fans.

To be fair, there was no talent on that side of the ball last year. The starters who left, are all at small schools. No one got drafted, etc. I don't think much will change this year. We have a Safety playing CB, Star playing LB, and no edge transfers to help rush or seal the edge. We have to get some D help but will take 2-3 years to develop the new recruits.

    Two things:

    1) Gary Patterson isn't in Austin because of open mike night at Antone's

    2) If he was still alive, Dick Tomey would be screaming 2004/2005

I have no problem with his answers. They’re just words, and there’s nothing he could’ve said that would change 2021.

If he makes significant strides in Year 2, it’s all good. If we don’t see progress by the end of September, it might be time for a change. Frankly, I do expect to see considerable improvement. Sustained improvement, although September 10th could be ugly.

if D is inconsistent, keep the offense humming down the field with scores until D becomes effective....!! Then you will have the desired balance!

OU defense lost most of its credibility when Greg Davis was fired. He was their best friend.

CFB is a game of balance and Sark speaks of it often. His game strategy last year was solid and we took early leads in most every game. We were winning at half in I believe all but one of the losses and going into 4th qtr in most. It should be lost on absolutely nobody that we weren’t the most talented D unit last year by any stretch and with virtually zero depth. Now here’s where the balance part comes in. Go back and actually look at the game series on each of our losses. After a quarter and a half our O would go 3 and out and gain next to no field advantage about 70-75 % of the time through the remainder of the game…..and Sark is well aware of this also. That thin D was exhausted in the 2nd half and it showed. OU illustrated it and every team thereafter at least saw what could be taken advantage of in that circumstance. It sucked to watch and nobody desires a repeat. The D will indeed likely be somewhat better simply with the O playing a more sustainable ball control type of game throughout and giving them an occasional deep breath, which they seem better equipped to do this year. The D will ideally improve with our recruiting efforts adding talent and depth. Lastly, PK was arguably the most celebrated addition to the staff by Sark at the time and there is a reason for that. He’s had ONE season w/ZERO players he recruited and the sincere lack of depth alluded to earlier. Love that we now also have Patterson in the fold, as it is one more example of Sark doing anything and everything necessary and available to him to improve our chances, and I am certain if he believes letting go any coach including PK that he will not resist. Patience is a virtue that many do not possess. Hopefully Sark does.

    Let me preface this by saying that too often I am not correct in my assessments. With the caveat, I just don’t see how the defense cannot be better. Here’s why;

Who did we lose from the 21 team? I can’t think of a significant player. That means that the returning players will have one more year under their belts. That is always a good thing.

Who did we add? If you look at the additions, portal + recruits, I believe that it has to be seen as a net positive. We might just see one or two breakout players.

Strength and conditioning. If the staff didn’t learn their lesson with respect to how the team was prepared (or unprepared) last year, we don’t deserve to be better. But I suspect that they did learn their lesson, and that the late game performance will be better.

Depth. Now I’m not saying that we have great death at every position. However, I do do believe that the depth at many positions has been enhanced.

    The addition of Patterson.

NFL aspirations. At least three players, Overshown, Cook, and Jamison, chose not to enter the draft and instead stay for the purpose of enhancing their value at the next level. That is a bit unusual, and it can only help the D.

Year 2 in a new system. While there’s no guarantee, the second year in a new system is predictably better than the first.

PK & Pride. Last year was an abomination, and all signs point to PK. To me that means that he has an opportunity to exonerate himself. He has to be extremely motivated to put a better product on the field this year.

I hope all that improvement is correct but PK gives no one confidence that he wants fire eaters or will push for that result. He is a super weak DC and it hurt us last year. Without some drastic improvement Patterson is the DC mid year.
