Question from Bama Fan: Best Route To the Stadium

I am coming in peace and looking forward to our September 10 matchup. I was writing to see if someone could please tell me what is the best route to the stadium if I am coming from Round Rock? Both Google Maps and Mapquest are directing me to take I-35 to Dean Keaton, but I'm sure that probably is a very congested route, especially since an 11:00 AM kickoff will mean that most people will be coming at the same time. Is that the best route, or is there a better one?

In advance, thank you very much for your help. If any of you will be making the return trip here next year (or in subsequent years when we start playing you guys regularly) and would like some help for getting around our campus, please venture over to Tidefans.com. I read there regularly but rarely post. But, if I see one of you guys asking for tips, I'll be sure and make it a point to retun the favor, and if I happen to miss the post, I can assure you that one of the many regular posters there will be happy to help.

Actually I’m thinking if you come early enough, it being Sat, it might not be too bad. Generally speaking 35 is a nightmare anytime. I’m not familiar enough with coming from north side I cannot help much but would guess one might say get off and go down Lamar or Guadalupe but someone else will have to steer you better.

It really depends on where you are parking, but generally speaking, I35 is your best choice. The cross streets to get over from MoPac like 35th Street or Enfield are very congested and it takes forever to cut across.

    Tide,

Do you have a parking pass? If not, I don't know where you can park. The school has all the garages from 15th to 26th tied up for season ticket holders. I come in 26th Street (Sorry, but old ways die hard) because I park in the San Jacinto Garage by choice. (I'm supposed to park on the street but every time I do, we LOSE!)

If you come down 35 to 26th, there is little traffic if you get there before 930.

If you can get a parking pass or choose to try the South side of the Stadium, you can jump off 35 onto Airport, turn left and go down to 19th Street (about a mile) and take it over. I'll call tomorrow and see if there is any day parking on lots, as well as where the park n rides are.

WARNING: Do not trust Uber or any of those. When we played USC a couple of years ago, the Uber drivers were charging $200+ to take people back to their hotels downtown. I made several trips with USC fans from 26th to downtown for free because it was 1130 at night. I met several former USC players and their wives/girlfriends.

PM me if you have any questions; I've been doing this for 50 years.

Parking options can be found here:
    Parkmobile|Parking Made Simple

Where you purchase a spot will dictate where you get off either 35 (or MOPAC if you are coming from the Southwest or Northwest). Even if you prepurchase the earlier you get there the better.

Thanks, folks. I do have a parking pass off Guadalupe between Dean Keaton and MLK, so it sounds like my best bet is to take 35 to Dean Keaton. I do plan to arrive early. Appreciate the info. And, Sabre, would you mind parking on the street for just this one game? :D

Well....lets see if you get on over to mopac you can connect to 290 there by that big Chinese restaurant. Take 290 west...west and keep going a good ways...youll pass a shooting range, a pizza "garden" ...whatever that is..and then you'll start coming to a big intersection with an HEB right smack on the other side. Now stay to your left there Im believin thats HWY71 West. You take that there highway you see way on out now I tell ya.....You'll pass some kind of water place there on your right, theres a hardware store to your left around there somewhere, and then some fancy polo club or something on your right. Now, right about there...pay attention...you'll pass an old house with a lot of weird plants and decorations in the yard...peace signs and roosters and colorful wind chimes and all kinds of spinny things....Well, just about 5 and 1/2 miles or so past that there's a county road to your right. Yeah, dont take that. But on your left there you should see a small little blacktop road to the left right past a big oak tree and you take that left.
Now when you take that left your going to want to stay on that road there for at least...oh I'd say at least 15 miles or so. Now, be careful...That road is real narrow...most suitable for a bike or person walking or something...and windy...lots of blind spots and low, narrow water crossings and single lane bridges....and deer....big ones.
That roads been known to take out many a lost travellers from out of town coming in to see football games and such...
Are you getting all this? Don't want anything to happen to you or for you to get lost and miss the....What did you say you were in town fer again?

    Tide,

If you are parking off Guadalupe, you might consider taking 51st/53rd off 35 over to Guadalupe. Very little traffic before the game on Guadalupe. 45th, 38th, & 34th are also streets going over to Guadalupe.

For those that don't have a parking pass there is a state owned parking garage located at 1604 Colorado Street. I would use 15th street to access the area.

Cost is $25 per game and it is about a 15 minute walk to the stadium.

Lots of tailgating going on in the area and it's also only a couple of blocks over from Scholz Garten.

For the Bama game I don't think you can be to early.

    Thanks Viper!

$40 for Health Center Garage at University of Texas gets you right at pre-game at Scholz Garten and the tailgating.

I haven't tried parking near the stadium for at least the last 5 seasons or so. Are there still CapMetro busses that run from Barton Creek Mall and other satellite parking lots?

I suggest planning to be at your parking spot at 8 am if you are a visiting fan. 9 am will be pushing it for someone unfamiliar with the area.

It’s a disgrace for the game to be at 11 am. Texas will be the favored destination to everyone we play in the SEC. Should be an SEC by-law that all conference games in Austin cannot start before 2:30 pm.

I also wrote that knowing full well that others on this site will be more than helpful. Also, the tide fan said he lurks on tidefans.com and invited us to read it next year for information about next year’s game. I think it goes without saying that tidefans.com is famously known to be 100% snark free, and that SEC football fan boards in general are paragons of commentary on southern haute fashion and cuisine, and on the jetsam and flotsam of the day. Toodles!

I think humor (as long as it is not mean-spirited) is part of the fun before a big rivalry game.
