well generally we had started 2 a days by now.............who remembers what a butt load of fun they were.............and our hydration consisted of getting a cup of ice halfway thru practice and quick drink from a sprinkler (when you could sneak one) when they had one going on part of the field......to prevent cramps we ate a handful of salt tablets so Im sure our BP was thru the roof.................and then to end it up the joy of wind sprints......................:yippee::whiteflag:

Thankfully my 2-a-days ended after August 1971 when I was a Senior. Gawd I was glad in August 1972 I did not have to ever do them again...

You got ice???? What a bunch puzzys. We got 1/2 Dixie cup of water & a fist full of salt pills. In 1969 (my final 2 a days), I FINALLY showed up in decent condition & didn't feel like I was dying 1/2 way thru. Incidentally, my Sr yr the salt pills were replaced by some stuff called Gatoraide...ever heard of it?

I remember having 2-a-days starting around mid August until Labor Day weekend. Full pads starting day 1. Got 2 water breaks which was luke-warm water from a hose that was laying out in the sun. That was in the late 1960's. Drills were brutal too. But, we survived it . . . luckily. We didn't get ice for practice, only on game days.

Same except we only got 1 water break which consisted of 1 small Dixie cup. I remember that every year there was at least 1-2 kids in Texas who died of heat related issues, usually in the Dallas or Houston areas. Coaches were under false assumption that water would cause cramps. My Sr year there was this new fangled powder stuff they added to the water to replace the salt tabs. It made the water salty & tasted terrible. It was a new thing out of Florida that was supposed to replace electrolites. Some crap called Gatoraid. Couple of yrs later they added water & flavoring, bottled it & sold it in stores. Wonder what ever happened to that crap.

    1sa,

That "stuff" was invented by a graduate of The University of Texas working at The University of Florida. Don't know what the split was. I have seen physicists at Stanford who got 10-25%, but most are closer to 10%.

Yes, I later heard about Dr. Robert Cade (He's a Longhorn Legend) & the Longhorn connection. I should have put "stuff" between parentheses as tongue in cheek. Too bad it's not called "Horn Juice".

I probably would have liked it better at the time if I had known.

To me the signal that 2 a days were about to start was the smell of defoliant in the air.

Cotton fields in the lower Valley needed defoliation about a week before practices started.

Bull juice = What Woody Harrelson drank in Kingpin.
Steer juice = something else altogether.

Later growing season on the Llano Estacado. Cotton defoliation didn't start until mid-late Sept to early Oct. 2 a Days meant that I didn't have to hoe cotton any more, but I still had to move irrigation pipe. Nothing like carrying pipe thru knee-deep mud in 100+* after the morning workout.

My 2-a-days were brutal but some of you had it much worse IMO... we got 1 short mid practice water break and salt tablets.

Summer before Soph. year in HS, I did not work out much in before August 2-a-days. I learned my lesson and before Jr. & Sr. year, I worked out on my own, especially in July to be ready for 2AD's in the heat. It definitely helped.

Worst workout we had was meeting players from Port Arthur & Nederland to fill sandbags and reenforce the flood control berm to protect Port Acres from an approaching tropical storm. (It was four feet below sea level) None of us knew anyone that lived in Port Acres, and quite frankly thought wiping out that part of the county would be "urban renewal".

We lived with so much pollution that it would be years later that some of us learned what Port Acres washing out into the Gulf would have done to the environment.

Hours of filling, tossing, and stacking sandbags. A couple of days later, when the storm cleared, we were practicing on a field in nearly a foot of water but sliding into a five-foot deep ditch of water with a DT or LB on your back kept me from wanting to snorkel or scuba for twenty years.
