Woody Williams according to burnt orange nation on twitter and I think Kendal Roger’s broke it before that
Woody Williams MLB pitcher. Alvin JC, San Jacinto JC — now that’s some Texas baseball country right there! Developed lots of arms at San Jac and helped get them to MLB.
I think he will be a good hire. He came out and worked a day with the pitchers on a select major team I coached. He really seemed to connect well and very knowledgeable technically. He pitched many years in the majors and has developed a lot of pitchers at San jac with Arrington. Very connected to the state. And we now have a pitching coach that use to be a pitcher. He will call pitches well and I think the players will respond positively to him.
Looks like Pierce knocked this one out of the ballpark. i'm pretty stoked for the pitching staff and I can't wait to see how this staff performs now. Going to be fun to watch, I think we will have our usual strong Texas defense. Pitching staff will have to excel on a very high level though to reach our expected heights with such a big drop off in offense. I'm also happy its a native Texan, I've always believed the best guys are here, they also know our state and kids better.
I personally don't care about a "splash hire" I just want the coach who can get the job done. With that said the radio dudes said that wasn't a big get and that it wasn't what they were hoping for. Can anyone in the know give more specific insight? I see a couple MLB pitchers came from him.
I remember Williams from when he pitched in Third Ward and met him once at a social function at the Hendricks home. My question is did any of these pitchers improve under his tutelage? Were they better in year 3/4 than they were when they arrived? Does he produce "pitchers" or "throwers"?
Who would a "splash hire" be, other than Frank Anderson? I think I read that LSU got a major league pitching coach--I guess that would be considered a splash hire. I haven't heard any radio discussion since the announcement was made--did they have any better suggestions?
Out of 30 MLB teams, there might be 10 pitching coaches worth the money you will have to pay one. Beast available becomes the goal, and if that one doesn't work the HC moves on.
One thing our new pitching coach has got to do is to get our pitchers way more riled up, tense, nervous, sweaty, and edgy on the mound. Guys like Sthele look way too relaxed and comfortable out there on the mound. Coach needs to bring in a carafe of expresso from Quackenbushes to have the pitcher gulp from between innings. And say things to the pitchers like “your entire future may hinge on your pitching performance this very inning.”
Cameron Rupp is back on the 40 as a student assistant, helping with hitting. We’ve also brought in Duke’s former pitching coach, Chris Gordon, to coordinate pitching development. He had very good results at Duke.
