every team we play should take a knee on 1st & 2nd down and get into 3rd & long on purpose.

Did ISU fail to convert on any 3rd downs today?

It seems like those are automatic conversions against us lately, I don't get it

Playing safeties 20 yds off the field. Gideon has some work to do this week.

Well…getting close to 200 yds rushing compensates for a middling day in the passing game.

Texas might just have the greatest defense in the history of CFB on 1st and 2nd down! 3rd down, not so much. Middle is open all day!

its almost like they give so much on first and second down that they take a play off. Killed the Horns against Tech and should have cost them the game today but for a very fortunate fumble.

    Its just not right that:
1 we don't win every game
2 we don't win by 30 every time
    3 we don't rush for 300 yards
4 we don't complete every pass
5 we don't make every tackle
6 we let someone tackle us
7 we let them make a first down
8 we let them catch a pass
9 we don't stop them for no gain
    10 we get penalties
11 they don't get more penalties
12 we don't make every field goal
    13 we don't avg 50 yards a punt
so we are just pathetic, but 5-2

Kind of makes you appreciate what we got at CB when Ryan Watts transferred in. I'm hoping the talent comes along, but right now we're REALLY thin in the secondary in terms of serviceable players. It sure seemed like the defensive performance took a substantial hit when he went down.

ISU’s 3rd down efficacy (many were long distance) was offset by their TO’s.

It's a shame this stat doesn't count for much.
We suck and should quit football at UT. Do we have a men's rowing team? If not, we should get one.

I don’t get the sarcasm on this thread. We’ve been vulnerable on third down for years, particularly on third and distances longer than 5 yards. I thought we had made some strides toward correcting this problem, but yesterday showed clearly that we have not.

When will the coaches start paying attention to Hornfans? And when will we (Hornfans) start receiving our fair share of the coaching budget?

We were lucky on a few plays yesterday. But in fairness, we have gotten hosed on quite a few over the years so the worm had to turn eventually.

There is no work if they continue to give that kind of cushion. Gideon doesnt set that standard, our steller dc pk defines that.

win the ground game. win time of possession. win the turnover battle.

that sounds like a real football game to me.

Was Watts out for the Tech game? (Serious question).
I think he played vs Tech but I’m not sure. And we showed the same porosity on third and longs.

But either way, my thoughts are that our problems on third and longs are not entirely the corners.
Could it be our LB’s? It seems like a lot of those 3rd and longs were in their coverage areas.

Could it be our defensive scheme? K seems hell bent on running a zone.

What do you call a team that runs a zone? LOSERS!

What do you call a team that runs a soft zone? BIG LOSERS!

Gundy & Sonny are anxiously awaiting our zone secondary.

The few times we stopped Iowa State was after Patterson made a trip from the South side of the 20 to the north side of the other 20 for a very brief conversation. Do we not have the talent to run an occasional zone blitz?

I'm pretty sure that when Steve Spurrier told Bob Stoops, "Your job is to get me back the football", he did not mean letting the opponent score quickly so his offense could go back to work.

I saw some pointed conversation between the safeties and corners (4 and 8) about zone coverage.

Texas ranks 88th or 41% in 3rd down conversions against our defense.
69th on 4th down or 52% and opponents have gone for it on 4th 25 times which is the most based on what I am seeing. This is the weakness in the defense. 1st and 2nd down we are pretty good. We seem to get beat in the middle of the field frequently likely because of zone coverage. If we can address this, we will be a solid defense but we have a difficult time getting off the field.

Our scoring defense has been pretty solid ranked at 21 and giving up approx 18 points a game. A bend but don’t break type of defense. If we can get off the field more our offense will get more opportunities and defense more rest. Tech ran 99 plays against us and were 6-8 on 4th down. 10 more minutes of possession.

ISU had 20 first downs. Watts had 3 tackles on 1st down catches. From memory, it seems 1 or 2 were on man defense.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time over the past year plus attempting to determine the objectives of our LBer pass D. Different players doing different things. Sometimes different players doing similar things. The guys that play are best seeing players flash in front of them but get tunnel vision and fail to feel their surroundings. That works well when we get pressure but fails when we lack pressure. Generally speaking they don’t get enough depth, and we’re too quick to attack upfield when QBs start to break the pocket.

I’m not sure OSU can take full advantage, but we were fortunate Gabriel didn’t play because he could have exploited it. Not saying they win mind you, but they likely put up some points. Baylor may be a tougher matchup for us than OSU. We don’t want Sanders at his best.

I wonder where we stand if you just look at 3rd and longs?
