Very pleased with YoY improvement of the defense and part of that is not churning the staff. We are still leaky on the back end playing Cover 2 or Cover 2 man.

Do I think this D has difficulty getting off the field -- yes. But that seems to have improved since Tek.

My main issue have been the repeated 3/4 play outs which is a killer for the D in Big XII. When the offense repeatedly asks the D to pitch a shutout while surrendering field position.

I think the rumors of Patterson not being active this week or not preparing a gameplan were only rumors. Per Sark- "Gary Patterson is doing his normal preparation for the coaching staff this week"

Been on local sports talk. Patterson said he removed himself because he has too much respect and too many friends at TCU.

Can someone with more football knowledge than me (probably not hard to find :smile1:) explain what happens all too often to our defense on third downs?

Why is the middle of the field left void of defenders? Do we not by now anticipate slants and crosses in response to a linebacker blitz?

Is it too little pressure on the qb?
Is it players not taking proper zone drops or not getting on to receivers coming into their area?
    Is it bad scheme?

I'm really not trying to drag anyone here. Our defense played their guts out to get that win last week. But what gives?

I thought it came from this parody account on Twitter. My take was the report from Anwar today put it to bed that it wasn't true. The responses to this parody account report are funny.

Yeah....no way Patt sits this one out. My guess is he is working overtime this week and will be there all heated and sweaty and pudgy and fired up twisting that visor here and there and walking it out like Unk.

It better not be true. Otherwise what are we paying him for? He's not a volunteer. Do your job or get fired, simple as that.

Interesting. Maybe they jumped on the rumor as fact to quickly. They seemed pretty sure about it. If I hear more this week I'll update.

Make the standard the 1983 defense and see how this defense measures up.

We should have a defense that will give our offense at least three more possessions a game.
There is no reason our opponents have the time of possession they have been getting.

If we hold TCU to under 25, bring me a plate for sure.

    Legend,

Mack did NO homework before hiring the guy. He had one great year at Miss State, but that's because of the talent he inherited. Check out State's draft choices that year. Second year fell way off. His agent sold Mack knowing that Mack wouldn't check it out.

To his credit, I think Manny has learned from some mistakes he made here. You can blitz and gamble TOO MUCh, which is mostly what he did.

Totally agree. I hate our current blitz scheme as I just dont understand how off base it is most of the time. Our lb are not elite speed or at least havent shown it so far. We dont have elite speed to blitz from the cb either. I dont know if they dont have it or are not schooled in it. There was a time around 2009 that we were exceptional at defense. I sure miss those days. Perhaps if we can just continue to improve we can get there.

So this morning they talked for 10 minutes on how they cant wait to see what Patterson will bring to the game having an axe to grind with TCU after being fired. Talked about how intimately he knows every strength and weakness of almost every player on that team. Clearly the afternoon crew jumped on rumors and didn't know what they were talking about.

    Vol,

I think they grossly overstated Patterson's feeling for TCU. The guy loves the school, the program, and lots of people still there. I think any animosity is toward certain people and not the program itself.

I also think that Patterson wants all the credit for a Texas victory to be to Sark and his staff and doesn't want anyone saying, "you wouldn't have won with Patterson's help".

FWIW, Del Conte's secretary is now Sonny's secretary.

Very good showing by Coach PK and the Texas Defense vs TCU—the top offense in the conference.

    Held them to 17 points
    Scored 7 points

    Net 10 points.
    Against an outstanding offense.

Great play on the two TDs. A 75 yard TD run and an embarrassing blown coverage on 3rd down to lose the game. TCU's defense gave up 3 points. The defense did play better than the offense, but who cares?

Just an opinion. At this stage in his career, Patterson doesn't want to grind every single week like he used to. I think he's assigned to a game a month for major input / scheme, the best teams on the schedule

    Sept, Alabama
    Oct, ou
Nov, tcu + season ender vs bu

3 of those have been played. So far they've been the best games our D have played by far. The other games, we've been average or below.

I don't know this to be true, but I posted the possibility after the Alabama game. He's not a week to week guy at this stage of his life. That Alabama game was different than anything we had seen from PK. We can now add ou, tcu. I just can't credit PK for those 3 games since we all know his norm.

You cant expect a defense to hold up perfectly for an entire game when they are continually sent right back on the field due to offensive or coaching ineptitudes.

That was a tremendous defensive performance...similar to vs bama....
AND while missing two key defensive back starters (Jamison and Guilbeau) dont forget.....

Yep. A lights out performance for the D. More impressive than The Bama game as the Frogs have a great offense.
