For the first time since a thrilling 2011 appearance, the Washington football team is headed back to the Valero Alamo Bowl. The Huskies will take on Texas, Dec. 29, at 6:00 p.m. PT, in San Antonio in the 30th edition of the game, played at the Alamodome.

The Huskies' lone prior appearance in the Alamo Bowl was in the 2011 game, an historic shootout against Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III and his Baylor team. Despite four passing and three rushing touchdowns from Husky quarterback Keith Price (a bowl game record for total TDs), the Bears prevailed, 67-56, in the highest-scoring, non-overtime bowl game of all time.

This year's edition will pit the Huskies, ranked No. 12 in the final College Football Playoff rankings, against the No. 20 Longhorns (8-4), who are led by Steve Sarkisian, the Huskies' third-year coach at the time of the 2011 Alamo Bowl.

Washington, which won its final six games to finish the 2022 season 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the Pac-12 (tied for second place), is making its first bowl-game appearance since the 2019 Las Vegas Bowl. The 2022 season marks just the third time in program history that a first-year head coach has led the Huskies to a bowl game, as Kalen DeBoer has done this year. The Dawgs' 10 wins were most-ever at UW under a first-year head coach.

Washington has faced Texas just four times ever, with the Longhorns winning three of those four. The teams played a home-and-home series in 1974 and 1975, with the Longhorns earning the win in both, led by former UW head coach Darrell Royal. Washington got its first win in the series in the 1979 Sun Bowl, as the 13th-ranked Huskies beat No. 11 Texas, 14-7. The Longhorns won the most recent meeting, coming from behind to edge the Dawgs, 47-43, in the 2001 Holiday Bowl.

The main thing I remember from that game is Major’s jubilation after the Ivan Williams TD for the Longhorn win.

Which stupid kiddie mascot is better?

I hate Hook'Em. It is an embarrassment to the awesomeness of Bevo, the world's greatest mascot. Frank Lee, I'd pick Harry The Husky over Hook'Em any day of the week and twice on Gameday.

But he is SOOO much better than the 1st one. That one looked like an avant garde replica of an amoeba that screwed a hippo.

The real Bevo probably really looking forward to the mascot meet and greet photo before the Alamo Bowl. This will be his new "friend", apparently named "Dubs". If I remember correctly, Bevo REALLY likes doggies:

Agree 67, and they do love him. My grandkids stand in wide eyed awe when they get to see him. It’s worth any of Godz disdain.

To be fair to Godz he is an adult and a VERY loyal Horn.
Maybe he just prefers the Bevo who didn't take any chit from Uga

Those highlights really show what a strong receiver group (including tight end) that team had and how they went and got the ball. About half those completions were under thrown or off target but it didn’t matter as the receivers went and got it and made plays for the qb. Also, Major really spread the targets around. Ewers needs to learn that. The other thing is that half of the defenders on both teams would have been ejected for targeting in that game under today’s climate.

Was nice seeing Major with accurate throws and the receivers actually catching them!!! Also nice having a LB with acceleration like DJ had. We have not had one like him since!

Is this the monstrosity to which you are referring? (I snapped this pic on a foggy morning in November 1998 before the A&M game)

That would be embarrassing even on the high school level, much less a Div-I university. Looks like a mutant horse that sprouted horns.

(or maybe this was just some random dude that cobbled together his very own Longhorn costume.)

That's it, GJ. Deduct tape, chicken wire, Elmer's glue, newspaper & fake tan spray...would have made a better rendition. Somewhere I saw that that atrocity cost in the neighborhood of $15K.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

If Major started 2001 BIG XII championship game vs. COLORADO (instead of Simms), he would have engineered a win like he did in 2000 Holiday Bowl vs UW !!

Simms had a pedigree, better skills and won some big games, but I always preferred a gritty, competitive Applewhite that knew how to absolutely read defenses.

With my Dad and young son, we were at the game.... I got wood when MAJOR came into the game late vs. Colorado, threw a TD to BJ Johnson (IIRC) to start a late rally after Simms put us in a huge hole.

AFTER TD TOSS, MAJOR POINTS TO CU BENCH, WE AIN'T DONE YET MF's!!! :headbang:

...have the photo but cannot post from my phone. Maybe one of you have it?

Right there with ya, WM, both then and now! Still angers me that Mack wouldn't pull Simms way-way sooner.

Here here. I was a Captain in the Applewhite camp —as expected.
I was in Irving that night and it was my second time I really felt Mack Browned on. I think Simms faked injury or they just said he was injured.
The boos and yelling for Applewhite was that bad.
Somehow Simms was “too injured” to start in the bowl a month later…
Mack also had to promote Ivan Williams back in the starting lineup after sending him to 2nd string after being Mack’s fall guy for OU.
Both were studs in the Holiday bowl of course and Mack was dense as mud. He learned a lot, but his teams to this day are inconsistent.

    I agree.
But look at the time the O-line gives Major.
    Ewers would be envious.

Washington has no “opt outs” for the game becoming the exception to the rule in today’s NCAA football bowl landscape.

I admit I got nervous watching that preview of udub's Qb and stats on passing offense.

Hopefully, our run game can keep their offense off the field.
And I hope our offense has the ball last. :)

I've got a feeling Ewers shows up for this game.
He's had plenty of time to physically and mentally prepare for the game. Sark should have a good gameplan in place and Quin should be able to execute it.
OTOH, if the OSU Ewers shows up we might have a problem.
