If you want an early start to the season the Under Amour game will be on ESPNU starting at 3 pm CT on 1/2/23. It is an opportunity to watch Bunton and Swindle in action. the practice will be broadcast an hour before.

Ella Swindle was great in the UA game. She set a great game. I can't wait to see what the Coaching staff does with her game.

Malcom…..there were like 26 players…..13 per team. Two setters per team. Did Swindle play much?

She did Flash. She did not start but came for 2nd set. I think coach intended to rotate her and the other setter but the other team started taking advantage the shorter setter. They could not keep her on sideline. As I said, she played a very good game. We have alot to be excited about.

Excellent. Perhaps Elliot will go with her if she’s that good. I still bet we’ll get a portal setter. Could be a back-up or starter depending on Swindle’s skill and maturity. Encouraging. Thanks

Swindle is like 6’-1” and Pedroza of Ohio State is 6’-2”. Size is definitely needed at setter to keep from being picked on defensively. Hope we get Pedroza and that would be some combo.

Her coming to the 40 in January will be great. She set the middle, the slide and the pins well. I'm confident Her backrow defense and blocking footwork will improve.

The college game will be faster but there was alot of talent on the court tonight. Probably the most entertaining all star game I've seen.

Nebraska had five recruits in the match. Pitt had three. Texas, Minnesota, and Stanford each had two representatives.

Yes I did. She had a few good moments/blocks. I don't remember her team setting the middles much.

Bunton will for sure redshirt this season. She has the potential to be one of the best blockers Texas has ever had and that’s saying a lot considering who has came through this program. She wasn’t see at all in the match which sucks but she is a future all American for sure.

Completely agree. The level of competition in that match was the best I’ve seen watching the all American game. Some absolute studs coming in for many teams and Swindle is one of them. If she can add a bit more tempo to her sets then she can and will be elite from day 1.

Sounds like Swindle is the real deal. I would like Elliot to speak up and address if he has the trust in a freshman to lead this team. Sure would like a known like Pedroza. We’ll see soon if Elliot takes a backup setter. The soon is undefinable as the portal window during summer could change things. A lot.

First spring match was yesterday and Texas won 4 of 5 sets played against TCU in Ft Worth. They play Friday night at 7 in San Marcos against Texas State. Swindle looked really good on the stream yesterday, I'm excited to see her in person. All spring matches are free admission.

Has anyone used a radar gun at a volleyball match. Some of the kills last night were hit HARD. It's a new team so it will be interesting to see how quickly they gel. Even thought they won handily, you could see the effect of a new setter and new hitter. And the new setter is almost as tall as the hitters... Asia continues to block like a wall. I'm looking forward to another successful year.

Halter playing libero was simply dynamite. I couldn’t understand what Elliot said about that and moving back and forth from defensive specialist. The new setter looked good. Her height will add to the block substantially. I only saw sets 2-4 but wife said Texas won sets 1-4 and Baylor set 5 against subs. I think Horns had a libero transfer from A&M Corpus Christi and I didn’t see her.

Strength up the middle: O'Neal and Bergmark are outstanding. Halter could be Fleck 2.0. And Skinner's back row attack is dynamite

Saw a lot of good back row attacks…..especially from Skinner. Not many if any setting to middles. A few slides to O’Neal. The new setter will be good offensively as she has the height and skill and inclination to keep the defensive middle honest. Seversl times she went straight offense when they were expecting a set. I can’t remember the volleyball term for that play but it should be a good weapon.

You are referring to Carissa Barnes from Corpus. She will be on campus this summer.

I'm pretty sure each of our spring matches has involved a setting theme. In the first two matches there were very little back row attacks. All the sudden, Wednesday night Swindle was going backrow consistently. Very excited to see what Swindle can do this fall when the full arsenal is unleashed. Our passing has been pretty good this spring (Wenaas got abused against Baylor) and if Barnes does arrive in the summer that will make the competition among the littles even fiercer.
Swindle going over on two is called a setter dump. But at her high school, she had her own chant "Swin-dle Spe-cial :e-clap::e-clap::e-clap:". We need to get that going at the Greg.

Elliot mentioned that they were trying to get more lateral movement out of Wennas…..or something like that. I’m very interested in seeing how libero competition plays out. Barnes, Halter, Akana or ??. Skinner on back row attack seems lethal. I thought Bergmark was done but apparently not. She’ll be an asset. The other hitters are still to be decided. Some flashes from all. I love the setter dump. My 14 year old granddaughter is a left-handed setter for Frisco Flyers and uses the dump at times. I like it. Occasionally it is a terrific play but can’t be overused. Swindle used it like 3 times in a very short time. I sure hope Barnes shows up and takes the libero spot. In my fair and biased opinion the fewer changes the better….leaves Halter and Akana to last year roles. Jury still out on Wennas as a full rotation player. Thanks for all’s insights.

If I understand correctly Auburn Tomkinson (OH), Nya Bunton (OH), and Carisa Barnes (libero) are still to arrive in the fall? That would make us 18 on the Roster for the 2023 season, exactly what Jerritt carried on the team last year. Any others coming?

Bunton is a MB but played OH for her high school team. Besides those three I don’t think there will be anymore additions.

Seems like I remember stuff that indicates Buntin and Tomlinson are developmental players. Won’t see them until next year or so. I’m hoping Barnes is an instant plug-in at libero.
