Found this interesting website. Seems pretty subjective to me but here is their ranking explana

    Football Player Ranking Explanations
This website uses statistics and results to rank players. It does not use opinion/bias to rank players. Only professional league stats are factored into the ratings. What a player did in High School or College does factor into the ratings.

    Leagues That Factor Into Rankings
    1. AAFC-All America Football Conference (1946-1949)
    2. AFL-American Football League (1960-1969)
    3. NFL-National Football League (1920-present)
    4. USFL-United States Football League (1983-1985)

I don't care about pro success, VY is one of the best players this state ever produced.

Actually, VY had some success in NFL...Rookie of the Year, 2 x All-Pro...then Fisher got pissed @ him & decided to poison his well.

And I agree...VY was 1 of the best ever to come out of ANY state.

My first thought was Sammy Baugh. I know it's kind of leather helmet era, but because of his longevity, multiple positions, and ways that they had to eventually tailor the rule book to guys like him, I'd say he's the most impactful of Texans.

More recently, the toughness of guys like Earl and Mean Joe can't be topped.

Forest Gregg was a classmate and friend of my uncle. Every time the Packers would play in Dallas we got good seats!

    Bob Lilly?

Also noticed that Eric Metcalf from Arlington is on the list. Eric was from Arlington, VIRGINIA and Seattle.

List is too long to go item by item, but even if he rarely played, a guy that lasted 8-9 years with the 49ers or same with Jets and collected a Super Bowl ring would seemingly find a place.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Do not like or agree with the TOP 10 ranking on this list. Some very serious talent from the state of Texas here.

Earl Campbell, Bobby Layne, Sammy Baugh and Matt Stafford are ranked way too low! After first and high level pass.....

Vince Young at 277?! what a joke! yes some of those could be in the top ten but leaving VY out arguably the best college QB ever, what a joke.
No doubt he would have had a 2nd championship if he had stayed. And he defeated the best ever college team:argue:.

I know these lists are partly designed to start arguments in sports bars and internet sites and should not be taken too seriously but…., am I really supposed to believe there are 995 high school players in state history better than Doak Walker?

oh my goodness, Bob Lilly is not on the list. drafted #1 out of TCU and went on to a hall of fame pro career for the Dallas Cowboys and one of my favs.
Yea this list is a sham.
I think the guy who came up with this list was throwing darts at a turning board with names.

Apparently, their rules are to compare the player’s best 7 years—and I think they mean pro—and they “punish” a player with fewer years or fewer good years. Somewhat arbitrary, but that’s what they did. Earl really only had 5 full good seasons.

For that matter, Patrick Mahomes, just finishing his 5th season as a starter, would probably be in the top 10 once he gets his 7 years in.

Bob Lilly was first team all pro for 7 years, 11 times all pro. And Super Bowl champion. So, that was just a miss by the author no way around it.
