We are 4 games in and X-Man has 14 catches for 212 yards averaging 3.5 catches and 53 ypg. With his performance last year and all the preseason hype I feel like somethings not right and that he should be performing better. He also seems to have a bad habit of dropping very catchable passes. As a reference, Bijan has 154 yards receiving.

I think that poll question is far too limited, so I am not voting for either option.

Yes, I am disappointed in his production so far. Emphasis on "so far". I am not going to assign my feelings to his NIL money whether my disappointment continues or abates.

Worthy has had 1.25 games with the starting QB. Also, Neylor went down which means more coverage of Worthy by the secondary. I think the offense as a whole is not in synch - bigger issue than just Worthy.

Well sure, but your potential all Americans need to play like all Americans. One of ours isn’t.

We miss Angilau quite a bit.

Now that the season is over I'll stick with my disappointed vote on this poll.

Now that you know he had a broken hand much of the season, does that alter your feelings any?

This thread can be put away now that we know he had a bad break in his hand. He needs a medal of valor for playing last year.

    No,
Certainly the healthy players are better than a suspect player playing with a broken hand. He was dropping balls before his hand was broken and had a prima dona attitude before his injury.
But apparently Sark thought Worthy's presence on the field is more important than a healthy receiver such as Red or Thompson.

I agree. How many times has he pouted and said no more only to be talked back?

If the players on the depth chart couldn’t get playing time over a guy with a broken hand, what does that say about them?
Or Sark made the hardheaded decision to stick with him through hell or high water. Which he did.

I’m not sure what to make of it. It’d be easy to talk your way into any argument for or against. Was it a legit injury? If so, why so many targets? Is it discussed now to divert criticism?

I’m still confused why Thompson had 1 target for 32 yards. Try that again at some point. Injury to Worthy or not.

I do believe he was less than 100%. That impacted performance. Kudos to Worthy for making the excuse.

At this point, it’s all in the past. The future is the main consideration now. He has an elite trait or two. It’s unique so you run with him.

The hand issue notwithstanding, Worthy is an elite talent, but with (so far) an Achilles Heal. The drops are not new (as mentioned above) so the hand explanation does change my opinion. His drop in the end zone against Bama is a good example. That pass couldn’t have been thrown much better.

I remember hearing the Jerry Rice had drop issues as a young player. Not saying that Worthy is in that category. But maybe he can get it together this season. I do think that it is a hand eye coordination + ball tracking issue.

yea Sark has a tendency to kiss up to certain players. I believe that has cost us some games, speaking especially of Ewers, but Worthy also. I believe in benching someone who is not playing well or an injury affects their production. Hell, I believe a coach should grab a player by the facemask and cuss him out for doing something stupid and then give him a hug and let him think about it.
    old school.

Jerry Rice is a good example. Sark stated Worthy’s effort and attitude were there. Obviously the talent is. Yeah, he may not be Rice, but his exceptional talents gets him additional opportunities.

Yeah I think we’re have enough data to know that Sark has a certain chickenshit mentality about talent.

you have to be willing to take a chance on talent. He recruited players like Red for a reason. These are the types of players that can thrive under pressure. Yes they can also make inexperienced mistakes but you never know if you don’t take a chance.
Also one could argue easily we lost 2 or 3 games because he was committed to players who weren’t giving us anything for LONG periods of time.
Same fluid thinking should apply here. Benching a player is not a death sentence to them. If they’re worth a **** they’ll rebound. If they’re ******* hurt!? And you have potential star talent behind, and don’t take a chance?! It’s chickenshit mentality if you ask me. Fearful his star players will pout or fearful a young player will make a mistake. Either way it’s chicken **** loser mentality.

If Worthy really had a broken hand, I just cant understand why he would have been playing. Give it time to heal and put the next man in. When he is better, he would be back out there playing. Keeping a guy in with a broken hand just doesnt seem wise but I guess thats why sark gets the 6m ?

well this might have something to do with his head coaching career record being just over .500.
I do like his recruiting prowess though.
I am underwhelmed about several of his decisions but I still have optimism and hope, for some reason.

You guys are confused. Sure, keep him in when we had Bijan and Roschon playing. It was in the bowl game that throwing too much to Worthy didn’t make much sense (until the 2nd half when the offense wasn’t stopped except for dropped passes).

Just to make HornFans more interesting, I guess I will disagree.
Like it or not, many types of mental weakness, immaturity, and self-importance are part of what comes with the highest-talented athletes aged 17-22 in the year 2023 (i.e., born from 2001 to 2006). You may wish that they were all of the mindset to take orders and storm Omaha Beach at that age in 1944, but that's not who they are. (They are better kids in many ways than 80 years ago, but that's another story.)
So, again, like it or not, coddling is an important discipline that a modern coach must have at his disposal at least some of the time, and use it sometimes to keep a very-high talent on the field or on the team with, I hate to say it, special treatment.
Just look at my HF namesake, Vince Young. People said Mack Brown was a genius for not trying to make him mold to a pattern, and Jeff Fischer was an idiot for doing that--and that was not just in the on-the-field lack of traditional football discipline, but in off-the-field attitude and personality.
Even Tom Landry played Duane Thomas, and Jimmy Johnson stuck with Leon Lett, and the best basketball coaches in history put up with Dennis Rodman.
A lot of the people first in line at the athletic talent hand-out are mentally skittish like an over-bred racehorse, and it can be worth it to keep trying to get them into the starting gates even though they are bucking around and giving you a headache in the process.
So, the call is really, "are they worth the salt?" not whether coddling is a forbidden art.

So we wasted several of those games where he was ineffective, plus didn't give the other receivers a chance to develop. I'd have rather had him at 100% for the last few games than at 60% for most of the year.

Just in case you were responding to me, I think Worthy was awful, and he also brought down a lot of negative on a freshman QB by not reasonably trying to track long passes. I am not sure what to make of the injury explanation. All I was saying is that Sark and all coaches have to deal with massive egos and immature expectations, and efforts of compromise to certain ones might not necessarily make them idiots. Whatever was going on with Worthy, I agree it cost us.
