You hit the nail square on the head with the comment on having top 5 talent. I wonder how many were of that caliber at his head coaching stops. Probably not many.

Your 100% correct on the flash in the pan FB coach hirings. If the interim tag isn’t taken off RT, the powers that be need to get the hire right. By that I mean someone that has developed their own winning program and not by having ridden the coat tails of others.

Now off to find my Sunshine Pumper Texas T!

How about this complaint? Terry can only win the conference when he's an interim HC.

So hire him for 3 years as interim HC. :lmao:

A lot of these comments are quite humorous. I am certain that CDC has already been looking outside and also evaluating RT. If RT is given the job I am hoping its a short contract with zero guarantees so if he doesn't succeed then Texas is not on the hook like we have been with so many others (strong & staff, herman & staff, shaka). Terry has neve been successful running his own program. He has had success with Beards team. Texas will lose a lot to graduation this year so next year is going to be a much different team. I personally think Aterio Morris is going to be phenomenal. Texas beating a Kansas team without Bill Self has to have an * next to it. Kansas has owned the big12 in basketball since he has been there. Beard had a juggernaught built here and I still wonder if this would be a dominant team had he not melted down this year.

Legend, CdC keeps a "replacement list" for all of his head coaches in his pocket at all times. If he is going to replace Terry he already knows who can do the job. The problem is who can do better than Terry? That is a short list full of people he probably has no time for.

Also, what would CdC and Texas look like if they did not retain the National Coach of the Year who has a number 2 seed going into the NCAA Tournament? No respectful coach would want any part of that school and don't think "We Are Texas" will excuse such a move.

I understand where you are coming from but a short contract without guarantees is equivalent to "we are going to fire you next year" and will be used at every chance against Terry during recruiting.

5 years with an achievable bonus if he can coach is the minimum.

No win for Texas this year should have an * by it. Do all the losses post Beard have one? I am just glad not everyone is jumping on the Terry bandwagon. I am totally on the fence about this one. My #1 question would be, Can he recruit and portal the way Beard did? He was not all that successful at the schools he did coach at. But, it won’t bother me either way. If this team doesn’t at least make it to the Elite 8, that will bother me!

Terry's audition for the job is coming up. A&M is a huge part of that audition, then how we play and with how much composure against Third Ward if we get that far.

If he is to be retained, those two games should dictate the length and terms of his new contract, which could be as long as twelve months and no more than $2 million with bonuses.

Even with really good players, beating KU 2 out of 3 times - much less blowing them out 2 out of 3 times - was hardly a given. I don't know if he can recruit well, but he clearly has the respect of the team and leads and prepares them well for gameday.

Fresno State before him had 1 winning season in 6 years, only 1 winning conference record in 7 seasons, and hadn't made the NCAA tournament in over a decade. He definitely left it in far better shape than he found it even though he didn't turn them into any sort of mid-major powerhouse.

Phil Jackson took over the Bulls in 1989 from being an assistant. Boy did he turn them around with Jordan and Pippen. Then he did the same with the Lakers with mediocre Kobe and Shack.

The Jimmys and Joes are key. If Terry can recruit, he has proven he can coach with good players.

Like the analogy, but I'm not a Jackson fan. I could win with Jordan & Pippen (+ that surrounding cast) & with mediocre (HOFers) Kobe & Shack. Jackson was a "victim" of being in the right place @ the right time in Chicago. Also he was smart (or chicken ****) enough to not accept any HC job without at least 2 All Pro future Hall of Famers (mediocre as they may have been) on roster.

Well,I think you got my point more than you think you did. If Terry had gone .500 with this team, I could agree to return him to AC or move on. However, he took them to a #2 seed (should be a #1 seed) and beat Kansas twice by 16 and 20 in KC.

If he can go deep in the tournament, he will be able to keep recruits and also find new ones to build on. If he loses to aggy, he will have a hard time overcoming it on the recruiting trail.

Indeed. The more I think about it, them more I can see the aggy game outcome dictating Terry's situation. For recruiting purposes, it will hurt bad to be perceived as a lesser program than aggy as we head into the SEC. If we lose that game (assuming it materializes of course) about the only way our program can avoid the perception of being behind aggy is to hire a new head coach. And the best that would do for us is to leave the question open ended.

Not sure I would place equal importance on the UH game should it also occur. First, they aren't SEC bound. Second, considering recruiting, they have 7 Texans on their roster, three from the greater Houston/Beaumont area. We also have 7 Texans on our roster, but only one from greater Houston. (Forgive me if I miscounted here.) I feel like there is enough Texas talent to support both programs, and both are capable of recruiting outside the state too.

No doubt there is enough talent in Texas for multiple teams to win. The difference between the 2 is Houston has a coach with a long history of elite success. Texas has a coach with a long history of mediocre. I don't know if these 2 games mentioned will have a huge impact either way on whether he gets the job or not. As one other poster noted, CDC keeps a list of coaches in all sports. Guaranteed that RT was on no ones list prior to December. He probably has some opportunities now but nothing of the caliber of Texas. Luckily I dont have to make the decision. Not sure when Tech got Beard that they had any idea he would succeed there but he at least had a good history. Let the chips fall where they may but I am not a check the box person.

    Legend,

Third Ward has a long history of players who are not required to go to class with few if any getting a degree. That is one of the main reasons it took Guy Lewis so long to get into the HOF.

RT might not want that headache next year. If he’s catching it from all sides when winning, what will it be like for him if the losses pile up….

FWIW I don't think there are a lot of Terry haters. But there are Terry skeptics. What I saw this weekend made me less skeptical. I think this tournament will play a big part in the decision. I do not see a lot of options but if we lose in Des Moines that would not be good.

I'm not stuck on Terry but definitely think he's earned the job in my book. It seems ironic that Beard already has a full time contract and Terry doesn't. If not Beard then who, early on it was Calipari (no thanks), then Oats (not impressed with how he's handled the murder in Tuscaloosa) then I read Mussleman (guy just took a preseason top 10 team to an 8 seed and then threw a hissy fit in the SEC tourney). Can someone at least give me a name to get excited about?

Exactly. The odds of us landing a coach of that caliber are virtually zero. If that wasn’t the case, I’d be on the fence about Terry. But I just don’t see us doing any better. The bird we have in hand is a substantial upgrade over our most likely replacement.

Billy Donavan is an interesting name that has recently been mentioned in the same sentence as the longhorn basketball program. He and Chicago are likely parting ways after this season. Donavan has two NCAA titles on his resume.
If he wants to coach big time college basketball again this could be a good fit.

Agree. If the powers that be decide to thank Terry for his service but choose not to retain, Donovan is at the tippy top of my wish list.

I know some of the Texas homers on here just love RT. I am on record as not loving a guy who was never successful on his own being handed the keys to the ferrari. Now Donovan has done it on his own at a super successful level in college so thats a different story that RT. I have been a die hard longhorn fan for over 50 years. Way back when the only way to hear most of Texas games in west Texas was via the radio. I believe like Deloss Dodds used to say, most people try to keep up with the Jones. At Texas we are the Jones! The homers here either do not understand that or do not subscribe. Texas should never settle or be the school taking a shot on a guy who hasnt done it on his own. CDC makes the final choice and so far he has not made any mistakes. Beard brought a crazy woman with him from Lubbock and it wound up biting him in the arse. As I told you guys a month or more back that he would wind up at ole miss and this week proved that right. Hate what happened to him but it was his own making. Dont preach accountability and responsibility to your student athletes and then put yourself in to a compromising position.

Have every expectation that Texas will get it right on this hire!

Prior to Beard's hire, would you have hired Terry to run the team and why?

No major school would have hired RT as hc based on his prior coaching record with the exception of some homers on this board and thankfully they dont make that decision. As noted, he inherited a top 5 talented team and steered them to the tournament. Given this talent on Texas, seems just about anyone could have done that as well.
