It’s not being dumped. It’s being pumped 25,000 feet underground. It also helps the ground subsidence that has been going on for decades.
Yes. That aligns with what I said about chemicals below health thresholds. In fact, low concentrations below thresholds could be beneficial to health. Removing exposure to radiation and chemicals 100% actually kills cells. The point with the vinyl chloride monomer was that there are very large concentrations at the spill site and could go into water and air in levels way above the thresholds. Measurements have to be made and reported in order for people to actually know if there is a health risk.
Why would the Fed not notify the local authorities in Deer Park? And then stop sending the water AFTER it came out they were sneaking it in?
I’m very interested in the geology of this. Are they pumping it into a salt dome cavern, and it gravity drains down to 25,000 ft?
But what porous formation is down there a whopping 25,000 feet (and presumably sandwiched in between two not-so-porous layers…)? 25,000 feet is incredibly deep to drill all the way down to. I’m no petroleum engineer, but I’ve had a piece of some Gulf Coast wells before. That close to the Gulf Coast, I think that would be lower than the Midway. I mean we’re talking Jurassic/Smackover or something WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAY DOWN THERE. I would think it would take a special rig and the A team of drillers to accomplish that. 25,000 spanking feet down there. I’ve heard of wells in Pecos County going down around that deep before, but that’s not normal. And it would be very very expensive. But maybe it’s more routine than I think….?
I remembered this about VCM today. 14 yrs ago VCM was mixed with boron which is natural in soil and made Boric Acid. Extremely toxic, smells like burning rubber. I don’t know if soil in OH and PA has boron in it. TX/ LA does. VCM spent carbon was the worst we ever received and we processed 50 million lbs of spent carbon. We refused accepting it after that incident in 2009! The safety requirements at Oxy’s VCM plants was the highest in my industry. From my experience that whole area (OH/PA) will reap the health effects from this disaster for decades.
Technology - Texas Molecular Texas Molecular has a deep well injection diagram here. This is where it was sent. I have deep contacts in this industry, this is where the Ohio Sludge is. Sold Texas Molecular a good bit of carbon over the years.
Texas Molecular is a hazardous waste facility. You pay a lot more to send sludge there. So at least some of that sludge was hazardous. I have the contacts to get details, but I am busy. My old co-workers call on Texas Molecular now.
That’s pretty impressive. And it seems like a fairly safe way to “dump” hazardous liquids. But the diagram shows them injecting into the Lower Frio Sands at around 5,500-7,500 feet down. That makes a lot of sense. Hiwever, upthread they were saying it was being injected 25,000 feet down—which about made my eyes pop out. Maybe that 25,000 feet was a misprint.
When Hugh Ray Cullen used to famously say: “Flank the salt domes and drill deeper”*, he didn’t mean drill to the friggin center of the Earth… *and Cullen became one of the richest men in Texas following the philosophy expressed in that one line.
The thing is, with all this disposal technology available, it may have all been ok if they would have just advised the state and local authorities beforehand, and fairly compensated the receiving jurisdiction.
Too many of my friends took them up on that all-expense paid trip to Southeast Asia after High School. Half if them came back air freight.
