Since we are literally the 2nd to last game to get started in the entire NCAA tournament, we've got quite a wait ahead of us. So lets start looking at these matchups. First, some interesting interviews:

First Round Opponent - E. Carolina Pirates
Some nuggets from ECU interviews so far. ECU maybe sounding a bit confident already?

First, ECU Guard Synia Johnson (MVP of their conf. tournament) when asked about the matchup with Texas says:
“I think we have a real good chance”:

After the selection show, ECU Head Coach Kim McNeill says playing Texas is “Just like playing Houston” and “we just came from playing Houston, so the kids will be familiar with that type of defense.” [Uh coach, I would respectfully disagree. This ain’t gonna be like playing Houston]

A few days later after watching film, Coach McNeill was a little more guarded: “They’re big, they’re really really big, they have an unbelievable rotation of post players that are 6’ 3” and above, they are physical, they’re athletic, they really get after it on the offensive boards.” “They have more post-players than they do guards” [yeah, tell us about it Coach. And by the way, that wasn’t exactly by design]

Lastly, she invokes the name of Charlie Crème as alleged motivation because one of her players allegedly found an article where Creme-boy said “Texas was gonna beat us”:

    Second Round:
If we play better than Houston and somehow beat the pirates, then its either Louisville or Drake. Yes, Drake can beat Louisville. But everyone wants to talk about that possible rematch. Some really interesting interviews here.

First, man is Hailey Van Lith a seriously intense, Type A personality. She would have eaten the two snowflakes that left our program in the last 2 years for lunch. She says you are “Either born with competitiveness or not”. That’s the kind of player we need to continue to bring into the program year after year. Check out when she finds out from the press that she was literally just named honorable mention AA and was basically totally pissed off about – saying, “yeah, whatever”. Louisville players also have a chip on their shoulder for the lower seed they received and for not getting to host. One of them says at the end that they are going to be a "bracket-buster":

Jeff Walz - this one was really interesting. Jeff has apparently really been working on the Portal at night lately. Has some really interesting quotes here on roster management. Says Texas and Louisville are totally different ballclubs then when we last played. Also brags that at their arena they averaged 8500 fans per game which was more than most ACC men's teams. We really need to turnout for these games folks.

Here's Charlie-boys' full tournament picks. Has us beating ECU and Louisville (citing Rori's ability to defend Van Lith), but losing to Stanford. He almost always picks favorites and doesn't take many risks with his bracket:

Yea the guard in the ECU is the one I referred to in another thread when I gave my scout of them. She makes them go she’s not flashy but confident. I do believe we win but should give them our full attention. This tournament for Texas is going to have to be game to game. I know NO real coach with any real experience will overlook anybody at the D1 level especially in the NCAA tournament but with our limitations we have to take the quarter to quarter approach. If the ladies embrace that we can dance a while but if they don’t we won’t make it out of the 512. This season has been a roller coaster but they have shown when everybody shows up we are scary to deal with. From Rori leading, Shaylee has to score and be a threat not just play, Shay has to be confident and loose at the same time, D has to be dynamic, Faye had to Rodman, Amina has to spark, T Jones has to be that paint girl, Jak has to ready when it’s number is called, and most importantly Sonya girl it’s your last go at it duct tape that quad together and be a bucket because there no next year or another chance this is it for you. I have us in the elite 8 again if some other things go well

As much as I hate to say it this team is not playing it’s best ball at this time. Primarily due to injury. The last 2 years, and the history of Vic is that his teams are playing their best ball as they enter the NCAA’s. Not this year. The way we were beaten by Iowa State is a great indicator of what we are about to see. Maybe playing at home will help but it didn’t help against Baylor as we looked dismal. Believe me when I say I bleed burnt orange but my crystal ball is not sending out a good vibe.

Given more than 2 days to prepare for a team, Vic is gonna have the clamps on the opponent. Next day? Errr.....that depends. I agree, of the 3 teams Vic's brought into the tournament, this on one is the weakest in terms of bench and health.

First Year: COVID made everything such a mess. Who knows how good this team is really when everyone is masking up for practices.

Second Year: Can a freshman PG get us that far?

Third Year: We got 1 or 2 players off the bench that aren't injured that we can play?

Yeah. My attention has been on the possible matchup with Louisville, but watching and reading the material about ECU has me worried.

    I’m most concerned about a 9 p.m. tip-off.
Not for the team, for me.

It’s kind of odd that we didn’t get the 6:30 tip but I really didn’t look at the whole round to understand the reasoning.

As it turns out, that timeslot works out for those who want to watch both the men and women (on TV):

Men's second round, Saturday, March 18 (Round of 32. All times Eastern)

Thanks to Born in ATX for posting those great videos from ECU and Louisville and Charlie Creme.

We're going to have to walk a tightrope to get far in the tourney. We have to have a more balanced game than we saw against ISU. Just trying to get it inside is not going to work against the good teams. Which means the three guards have to be hitting their shots. If Rori isn't hitting her shots better, we won't go far, IMO. We have to be more effective against zone defenses (more penetration, good shooting from the guards). Rori's patented short range jumper will have to be working. Would like to see Morris, but am guessing we won't. That's my take.

Agree. Crazy that the men's team will be completely finished with the 1st and 2nd round b/f the women's team even tips off. Hope that people who would attend the women's game won't decide not to come simply b/c the men's game ends shortly before the women tipoff. I'm just going to have the men's game playing on my phone. This all could have been avoided if the women's bracket had put our games Fri/Sun. Too bad they can't show the mens game on the scoreboard screen during the Louisville/Drake game. You'd have the crowd reacting to a game on the screen and largely ignoring the game right in front of them.

In Vic's presser, he said he was thankful for the "extra day", and so am I, especially if that results in Sonay being able to play some. Personally, and for team, I wish our timeslot would have been switched with Louisville's. It would have ended up being at the same time as the men's second round game, so that would have been the negative for the fans.

Not putting the cart before the horse, but ESPN has three start times to be televised Monday night 7:00, 8:00 (two) & 9:00. Pretty sure UCLA will be 9:00 so my money is on one of the 8:00 tipoffs. Probably the optimum start time for a Monday night game in Austin. Will get you in the arena before sundown.
