Terry on-the-fencers, how you like him now?

Talk about troll, remember when Charlie Strong would troll him to his face in pressers and call him "Kurt"?

 

I don't understand why so many of you think Terry's pre-UT success was so bad.

He took over at Fresno State in their last year in a third-tier conference (WAC) and within five years built them into a consistent contender in a tier-two conference (Mountain West), winning it once.

He then took over an abysmal UTEP team and turned them around in one year. He regressed a bit in the 2020-21 season, but it's tough to judge anyone by what happened during the COVID year.

Both before and after these stints, he was a well-respected assistant at Texas with considerable recruiting success. And since Beard's, ahem, incident, Terry has led the Horns with rousing success.

I can't guarantee that Terry will succeed long term, but you can't guarantee that anyone else would either. We are not a "top-25-every-year" kind of program, and there's no reason to think we can land a coach with a pedigree any better than Terry's. I'm excited to have him as our permanent head coach.

Ok ok, I understand CDC's hesitation now. He's gunshy of basketball coaches with girlfriends.

 

The media is certainly hyping him up, so I’m sure he has suitors.

 

Nobody is saying he's a bad coach, what many are saying is he's not an elite coach. Yes he improved two bad programs from bad to average. His conference record at Fresno was 62-58. At UTEP it was 19-33. His best finish was 2nd not first and his next two years was 4th. His job at those schools was to build their level of championship program and he couldn't do it. He's done well with an elite team he inherited. There's no evidence he can maintain what he inherited so that's the hesitation. He'll get the job so we'll see if he can get it done.

Using an average conference record is very misleading because it includes the crappy team he too over. In his latter years, the record was much better.

Given where the program was, this is a ridiculous expectation. I’m sure the brass (and fans) at Fresno State were delighted to be within a few games of conference titles every year. He injected life into a dead program, building them into a consistent contender.

There’s no evidence that we could find anyone who could be counted on to do that. Given Terry’s proven success at Fresno State, and adding UT’s resources, there’s every reason to hope that Terry can do even better here. Is it a sure thing? Hell no. But we don’t have a sure-thing option.

Yes, we’re Texas. But we’re Texas basketball.

 

Texas has never had an “elite” basketball coach. Probably never will until we win a championship.

 

The interesting thing about the facts and rumors is how ND hired Penn State's coach, who lost to Rodney. Then we have a rumor that PS wants to hire Rodney. Why didn't ND cut out the middle man and wait to offer Rodney seeing as how he defeated their new coach?

I hope we want to be top tier. But the reality is our BMDs are far more concerned about football than basketball, and I suspect being "very good" in basketball will be good enough.

 

I guess the definition of top tier means different things to different people.
There are over 375 Div 1 basketball programs.
What would be considered top tier?

 

If you asked the average college BB fan what top programs come to mind when you asked him or her, would Texas be one of them? Doubtful. Thus, not top tier.

Same applies to any sport.

 

Top tier to me would be top ten virtually every year with every game played competitively and even our losses are worthy of our ranking.

I think all those answers are valid.
Interesting SN how many of your schools listed either didnt make the tourney OR are already out.

Good news, CDC can have conversations now with all the hot coaches we wanted (Calipari, Musselman, Oats, Lloyd) since all these teams have already exited the tourney. Poor Cal and Penn St have to wait.

 

UH and Bama lost. Horns are not matched well with Xavier, but if they win they have a great opportunity for a championship. Go Horns!

Yep. The people who prefer not-Terry to be our coach are just going to have to live with their disappointment now.
