Terry on-the-fencers, how you like him now?

I'm one of those. Terry and staff did a good job with this roster, this defensive system, and offensive system. But I still consider Beard the architect of those things. It will take Terry continuing this level of success with his own roster and system to convince me of anything. But I am enjoying every win. If I am wrong. Great. That means Texas will be strong for years to come.

I think pretty much everyone now feels Terry has earned the job, if last weekend didn't cinch it last night certainly did. The real question now is not do we hire Terry full time it's what type of contract he gets. I am hoping he pulls a Steve Fischer and wins the whole dang thing which means pay the man his money, but barring that I still think a 3 year deal with 3.5M guaranteed each year and incentives that take him up to over 5M possible per year makes sense and not the high guarantee contract that Beard had and other elite coaches would demand. If Terry continues to succeed, he will get that big guaranteed money with the second contract.

So Terry just sat on the bench with his thumb up his butt while Beard was here. Never worked to implement the defense or anything like that. No, no way.

Terry has done an excellent job. Short of us resurrecting John Wooden from the dead, there are no sure things. Even the best ones coaching today have slimy backgrounds, and didn't we just fire one for unethical behavior?

I don't know what's going to happen vs Miami, but at this point Terry certainly deserves a contract offer because John Wooden isn't walking though the door.

So cool to see how much they love RT and the positive vibes coming out of that locker room. So happy for these young men - they will remember this journey for the rest of their lives. Pretty cool to witness.

I was not one all in behind Terry even through the end of the regular season, but I recognized that he was probably getting the job eve at that point. My reservation’s were could he recruit both HS and the portal as a relatively unknown head coach and could he assemble a “team” i.e. big men and perimeter players that compliment each other. I had reservations about his game management with the slow starts and long stretches of “wtf” basketball in several games. At the end of the regular season I don’t think there was any doubt that he would get the job. With this run through the conference and now to he elite 8 he has, in my opinion, shown that he can coach the game and get the most out of the players. I also think that he now will have no trouble recruiting players and the players on the team staying or leaving will be a big part of recruiting. I am comfortable with him as the head coach and he is a Texas (at least the state) guy so this quite possibly may be the job that has been waiting for him. In short, “pay dat man his money “ and let’s roll.

Terry wins one more game and he is arguably our greatest coach.

Arguments where someone puts words in your mouth are always positively received from most people. The problem is that it is a strawman argument. We all know there is a difference between being a head coach and being an assisstant. Terry has year of mediocre head coach performance that needs to be included in your assessment of him, not just this year.

I think Terry is doing a great job. But Beard built this team. No doubt Terry helped that process, but Beard gathered all the pieces and put on the table and he did it in an incredibly short time.
If Terry can work the portal and keep this program playing at a championship level in the coming years then he is arguably our greatest coach.

If you think Terry will recruit his version of the Fab 5 then sure. Outside of that Fischer didn't do anything. The Fab 5 is one of the most famous recruiting classes in college basketball history.

National championship and 2 runner-ups. If Terry can do that I would be happy.

Fisher (no C) was an unproven assistant until late in the 1988-89 season, when he was elevated to interim head coach and won the national tournament.

He built on that flash-in-the-pan success to recruit the Fab 5, which lost the 1992 final to Duke and the 1993 final to UNC, iirc.

And btw, his second full season at Michigan was below .500. He would’ve been run out of Austin before he had a chance to recruit the Fab 5.

So, a National championship and two runner ups would be a bad thing for Texas?

Of course. The national championship came with a team he didn't put together and the 2 runner-ups were the Fab 5. If Terry can win the NC this year and pull a historically amazing class in 2025 then I'm board. Otherwise I would rather get a more proven head coach.

agree. It has to be Terry’s team because most of this years team will be gone.

Hopefully CDC will go get the best available in the country so that this season isn't a one off.

    Mona,

With Durant sitting in front of the TV camera with his checkbook open, and Ford being interviewed and shown by every station from Hanoi to Dubai, I think the deal might be done. At least Kevin is willing to put his money where is mouth is.

With the portal open, the decision on Terry or someone else will need to be made quickly. As it stands, Hunter, Morris should return Mitchell probably should but who knows. Do Disu and Bishop have a Covid year if they choose to return? Even if they do both may go. The two impact recruits coming in if they stick with their commitments. The head coach is going to need to find four or five transfers with at least one or two major contributors.
