I was wondering if anyone would pick up on SDSU’s cultural appropriation. On a related note: As you may recall, Cal State Long Beach changed their mascot from the 49ers to the Beach Athletics a few years ago because of … the inherent evil of wonton mineral extraction, I guess. So long, Prospector Pete; hello, Elbee the Shark.
Paydirt Pete isn't packing heat, so he should be OK. As long as he doesn't start oozing toxic masculinity, anyway.
As a public service, here are the fight songs for the teams in the Final Four (None of which are as iconic as Texas Fight or Hail to the Victors or a few others)
San Diego State sinks a set shot in the final half second to beat Florida Atlantic, 72-71. A thriller!
HV How many of Al's songs are sung by hundreds of thousands year after year at many different events?
Aztec is the name of a tribe, which appears to be OK. Indians and Redskins are not tribes but regarded as derogatory terms and racists. I wonder how ole Miss did not have to drop Ole Miss and just be called Miss since Ole Miss is slave jargon. Fl State is the Seminoles and Utah is the Utes. Probably others too.
When Nicholls State played in Lubbock I was curious about their logo, an N with a sword through it, and then heard the arena announcer refer to them as the Colonels. Googled to find out they’re a public university, named after a former Louisiana governor and Confederate Army general and the campus is located on a former plantation. How they’ve slipped under the woke radar thus far is amazing, and I applaud them for it.
