Terry on-the-fencers, how you like him now?

If its a 3M or so a year deal as reported then I am 100% on board. Let's see how next 2-3 years play out and if he can continue his success then the $ will follow.

I love CDC but something about that pic creeps me out a little.

My feeling is this: Rodney's success is huge for the black community. We'll see if the transfer portal bears this out. He may attract more talent than we know what to do with.

It’s got a used car deal vibe.

More investment banker than used cars. You guys have no idea how much money Chris just made The University.

We can't afford to lose him, but turning the banking industry over to CDC would solve a lot of problems.

CDC recognizes a winning deal: a coach grateful for the opportunity, support from former players, positive outcome this season vs possible shitshow, etc.

I agree. He's shown quite a bit. This team will be very young next year and we need transfers in the worst way. He could have a downish year if he can't land people like we've seen in the portal thread. He needs some upper-classmen ready to bloom by virtue of their experience. But if has players, I am convinced he can win and get us back to this same level. In the end, did we have a superstar player? I say no. But we had a good group of good to very good players to whom the game had slowed down. He worked with what we had. And look at Disu's development. Shouldn't he get credit for that? We have complained bitterly about the lack of development of our top football recruiting classes and Disu is evidence that Rodney can develop players. I know Disu is older and had success at his previous stop but he came on very strong at the end. I give Rodney credit for that. Let's see if Morris blossoms (assuming he doesn't go pro).

I was ready to write the team off the hour I learned Beard was behind bars. For Terry to keep them together then go ahead and win the Big 12 and then make the Elite 8 is beyond impressive.

Seems like a great deal for both parties. We had to give 4+ years so as not to hurt recruiting, the amount of the deal is great for him as he's set for life even if he flops out and it's cheap enough for us to buy out in that case too. And if he succeeds he's gonna get the serious big bucks next contract (which might even be done before the end of the current one).

I'm happy we signed him up. He deserves it and the money is not over the top stupid like Jimbo's and so many other coaches we've seen over the years.

But I will say this about Dick Vitale (I won't call him Dickie V because it's stupid for a grown man to have a nickname like that; and besides, he's not cool at all as that nickname would imply) and I'll say it like Ronnie Van Zant said it to Neil Young:

Texas don't need Dick Vitale around anyhow...

He's a full blown clown and his act was old the first time I saw it. I can't believe he's famous other than for being a shill for the game and a narcissistic loudmouth.

Too small a sample size. He might be one of the all time greats, but I don’t want to roll the dice on someone unproven again (see Shaka Smart, Charlie Strong, Tom Herman, Karen Aston, David Pierce, etc). Sometimes they’re successful - sometimes not.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Head coaches shouldn’t come to Texas to learn how to win. They should be hired at Texas to continue winning at the highest level. IMO.

My feeling is a national championship coach is not always a guaranteed winner. See Jimbo Fisher.

I suppose Billy Donovan would have been a nice hire but it's been a very long time since he's won anything.

At least they didn't go all out on DEI by hiring Mulkey.

I think Rodney proved himself. He's not going to be overpaid. And as I've said, he has much support from the black community and we might be in line for some stellar recruiting and transfer classes.

I appreciate what you are saying.
Do you have an elite winning coach you want to see come here?

Like I said - sometimes they work out. RT might turn out to be the Cliff Gustafson of MBB. Only time will tell.

I don’t. RT might be the best fit. All I’m saying is I’d rather have a proven coach, but there’s not always one available when you want one. The players seem to like RT and that’s a BIG positive in my book.

The all-time greats in all sports had to start somewhere. Hopefully this one works out.

Does anyone know how much of the recruiting he did for Beard? If he was heavily involved in getting these players to TX and he can continue that success, UT just might have found someone who can keep the program at an elite level. I hope so.

Although it wasn't major college, Gus' record at South San was pretty stellar. Not sure how much he changed his style from South San to Clark Field. Perhaps his biggest learning curve was his prize recruit from South San. That was a huge learning curve.

I keep hearing he was previously involved with recruiting TJ & KD during previous regimes. Is that true? I know both are very loyal to him.

Recruiting on KD, yes. I think, however, Frank Haith was the Barnes assistant who helped with TJ. Terry didn't arrive at UT until TJ had already been signed.

Yep. Elite 8 in year two even after he was away from the team for 3 months. His moral failure doesn't change that fact. He was the perfect fit for Texas who could have been the next great coach at Texas. Obviously that didn't work out because of external factors.

Obviously, nobody saw that coming. But external factors also make the man. Is Rodney a rational human being without anger management issues in his life? I don't know. Should UT have known about Beard possibly being volatile? I don't know. Depends on how hard the background checks were. It does prove a background check is no joke.

Neither does his "moral failure" change the fact that he left his team & The University in a lurch. I don't intend to speak ill of Beard. We all have our demons. RT picked up the pieces & finished the year in pretty good fashion.

I wish Beard well, both personally & professionally (unless his team comes up against the Horns). But he's history (short; VERY short history). Time to move on. RT loves his team & this University. It's time to stop with the "what if's", if only's","yea, but's", "could have been's". RT IS OUR GUY, like it or not. As Oat Willy used to say, " Onward thru the fog."
