Now, if they will just find a way to get Steve to stay as President for 4-5 years, SFA will be one of the few "destination" schools left as it appears that Sam, ETSU, NTSU, Arlington State, Lamar have all become commuter schools. UTSA was one until Richard Romo changed it into a place that kids wanted to stay & live.

Good for SFA. I hope they keep the name.

As an SFA grad I'm pleased with this decision.

They were assured they will keep everything unique to SFA they want to.

SFA colors were always purple and white until about 20-25 years ago when a little red flair showed up on uniforms / helmets.

I wouldn't mind seeing a little burnt orange creep in - in place of that red!

I suppose we will find out if the UT system has more honor than Carlos Truan and the aggy system. They made the same promises to Texas A&I. Lying sacks of ****: no longer the same school colors nor name... And I swear the mascot has been converted from a Javalina, to a jaggy.

Edit to note that Texas A&I had an incredible winning tradition when independent, but has adopted the aggy way of mediocrity in sports since.

Note to you youngsters... Sangre brings up a good point about Texas A&I from the past. They dominated and won many conference football championships [edit] and many National Championships!!

    Not just conference...

A&I won NAIA national championships in 1959, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1979. All of those were played for and won, not just topping the polls like Division 1 schools of the time.

And for you trivia buffs, the 1970 title came at the expense of none other than those W-sips from Wofford.

    SN,

I had an offer to visit A&I under Coach Steinke. I had no interest in A&I, but I had a friend who wanted to go there. His parents couldn't afford to send him to college. He asked me to go with him. The things I remember most:

    1) Coach Steinke in his office saying, "I don't work the way other schools do. I'll pay for the first two years, then if you are worth a ****, I'll pay for two more".

    2) He sat in the stands during games and had a couple of managers that ran the plays two and from the sideline.

    3) My friend was not "fast", certainly not fast enough to make it out of the prelims in the 100 in district. I think he ran a 10.2 or 10.3. Four years with Gil Steinke and he was a DB running a 9.2 at the Texas Relays and was a second round pick of the Raiders.

The man recognized potential and could develop talent

    Sabre
I am very ignorant of back office dealings
So Steinike told this player he would pay him for 2 years And then coached games from the stands?

Coach Steinke said that he would pay for the first two years of college, then pay for another if he played well enough.

Yes, Coach Steinke was known for sitting up in the stands and using managers to run play calls to the sideline

He meant 2 years on schollie and then see where you stand. If you could'nt cut it, you lost your scholarship.

Hey Wooster! I started at SFA and spent a couple of years there before transferring to UT-Austin, and changing my major from Zoology to Accounting/Marketing. SFA was a fun campus though, and had lots of good looking women to look at.

Joe, we met years ago at a spring game and Schotlz Bier Garten afterwards.

What years were you at SFA? Party years in the 70's baby!

Fall 1972, after HS I followed a GF to SFA. Pledged a fraternity - that was a good decision for me. GF situation eventually died, that was also something good.

Seriously took steps to dream transfer to UT for business degree after Soph. year. Would have cost me 3 years to graduate vs. 2, so I stayed at SFA.

I have far more family, friends and personal roots to UT than SFA. Became Lifetime alumni of SFA after graduation but haven't given any $ since then. Friends at SFA pimped me often about my demonstrive loyalty to UT while there....

I was at SFA the Fall of 1972 through the summer of 1974, then transferred to UT that fall. I finished the the Zoology program, decided going to med school wasn’t what I wanted to pursue, and decided to go to business school and majored in Marketing and Accounting. Later added an MBA in International Business then went to Law School. Past the CPA exam, then the Law exam and now I’m semiretired. Only take on tax cases that interest me. That’s about all . . .

Yep! I had a lot of fun at SFA. Were you there when the night there were a bunch of "streakers" running around on the north side of campus, some riding bicycles, and a rock band came and played outside the in front of the Twin Towers girls dorm? Beer was being passed out for free which was great! That was a fun night! The SFA Cops got in on the fun, were laughing and put spotlights on the naked students who were dancing on top of the dorm. They also didn't care about all the drinking going on. What a night!

STREAKING was the craze at SFA that fall and a lot of campuses!!

Yes, I was there that night - a wild & crazy time outside Twin Towers and Dorm 13 & 14 - think those dorm numbers are right?

Anyway, I was there as an observer enjoying liberal libations!!!

I dont miss classes, but I miss those times and my youth. Life has been good to me, but if I had to do it over again, I would have not followed GF at the time to SFA, I would have gone to UT as I planned, and then after college married my HS sweetheart.

Life is all about timing and the decisions we make my friend.....

It is! I remember getting in from Germany and having to pack that night to drive to Stephen F. the next day. Got my stuff squared away in my dorm room, bought the books I would need, and crashed for the night. My roommate thought I was a early bedtime guy, until I told him I had been working on a farm in northern Germany just two days before. He cut me some slack after that. Still had to get up at 4:30 every morning since I was on the soccer team which practiced at 5:00 a.m. every morning. I pretty much felt like a zombie that first week of school. But, those were good times, for sure! Wouldn't trade the experience for the world.
