i msged a 'jzdenton' on anandtech the other day. wonder if he's the same guy here. .... and i prefer self built
Where (locally) is a good place to find barebones computers built with quality components? I can do everything myself, but if there is a local shop that does good work I'd go with them.
what would be the advantage of getting a 48x cd-rw as opposed to getting a 16x DVD if you were also going to get a DVD + RW/+R in the other bay?
the 48x CD-ROM would be for quicker installs perhaps, or for applications which run from the CD. It's not near the problem it used to be, but CD-R and CD-RW technology used to be such that a burner couldn't read near as fast as a stand alone reader.
Well, I'd been meaning to get a computer for a long time, and this deal put me over the edge. I spent way more money than I should have, but I still had a graduation gift of a computer hanging over my head from my folks from 3 years ago, so i was able to cut my own personal contribution, but I think the setup I got will prob last me for the next 50 years. I am excited!
DMLonghorn - me, too. I have never had a personal computer. For the past 8 years I've had laptops from work that I'd take home. Before that I would either use my roommate's computer or the computer lab on campus. This deal spurred me to buy WAY more computer than I need:Dimension 8400 MCEPentium® 4 Processor 540 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB), Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center 2005 Edition* Dimension 8400 Media Center Pentium® 4 Processor 540 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB) * Memory FREE UPGRADE! 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x512M) * Keyboard Dell Wireless Keyboard and Optical Mouse * Monitor 20.1 in 2001FP Dell Ultrasharp™ Digital Flat Panel Display - with PIP * Video Card 128MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon™ X800 SE * Hard Drive 250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) * Floppy Drive and Additional Storage Devices No Floppy Drive Included * Operating System Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center 2005 Edition * Network Interface Integrated Gigabit Ethernet * Modem 56K PCI Data/Fax Modem * Document Management Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 6.0 * CD ROM/DVD ROM Dual Drives: 16x DVD + FREE UPGRADE! 16x DVD+RW/+R w/ dbl layer write * Sound Card Sound Blaster Audigy™2 (D) Card w/Dolby 5.1, and IEEE 1394 capability * Speakers Dell 5650 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer * Productivity Software Microsoft Office Small Business - Includes Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint * Security Software Norton Internet Security™ 2004 15-mth (3 extra mths included) * Digital Music Dell Jukebox PLUS - Rip and burn your CDs faster, print CD labels, and more * Digital Photography Paint Shop™ Pro® Trial plus Photo Album™ Starter Edition * Limited Warranty, Services and Support Options 3Yr Ltd Warr,At-Home Service, and Tech Support plus Nights and Weekends * Dial-up Internet Access 6 Months EarthLink Internet Access Included * Operating System Enhancements Combo: Microsoft® Plus! for Windows XP and Digital Media Edition * Enhanced Software for CD or DVD Burner Combo: RecordNow! and MyDVD Deluxe * Media Center Enhancements ATI E-Home Wonder™ TV Tuner with Remote Control I think I'll be spending way too much time on this in the foreseeable future.
traffic, i got almost the exact same thing, but upped the ram to 2 gb, upped the hard drive to 320 GB RAID. only minor differences from there. no way or i would have got the 20.1 in or the upped sound and video card without the discount. Again, way too much, but with 40% off, i just couldn't not do it!
DMLonghorn - yes, the TV tuner allows you to hook up a cable jack. It was a $99 upgrade. I've heard you can do this yourself aftermarket for around $50, but there's no way I would try that. (I'm sure I'd f*** it up.) Bob Wills - closer to $1,800 (excluding taxes). But, w/ this monitor, audio setup, warranty, etc. - I couldn't find a better price for a comparable machine. I was looking at both HP and Sony for comparable machines but the price on this worked out best. (Plus, honestly, I was tired of waiting.)
