The joke sounds funnier that way... "I sold it on ebay".......laughter... "I sold it to larry reynolds"....no laughter....
So she told the truth in a way meant to deceive. I guess saying "I sold the plane to a camaign donor" didn't sound as maverick.
Agreed, not a big deal. But it does detract from her image as sincere and straightforward. It could do real damage if other half-truths arise.
I took it as a joke. That she had sold it, but the ebay part was just a joke. Who sells a jet on ebay? Does that crap happen? Any of you sell your last home on ebay?
She said, "I put it on ebay" Never insinuated that she sold it there. No one ever met the min. bid. Was she supposed to sell it for a dollar? She did it in a responsible way. Sheesh.
Even though Ms.Sarah wordsmithed our speech so that she was technically correct, she forgot to tell the guy at the top of the ticket that she was being coy. Today, McCain made a speech where he said "She sold it on EBay...and made a profit." Cue wild applause. If I'm McCain right now I'm pissed as hell nobody told me. Hook'em!!!
Mccain misspoke. Very stupid. I'm sure Obama is pissed too about the 57 states he visited and the 2 he didn't get to... nobody told him he was wrong either.
You know, this is not a "misspeak". Think about it. Political campaigns love to create "narratives", little stories that low information voters can relate to. All campaigns do it: Bush and his brush cutting rancher ways, Biden and his trips on the train, etc. The GOP is really great at this. They can craft a story, and all their people will sell it hard. The story here is that Palin is supposed to be a "spunky", slightly quirky and decidedly independent champion of the people, a fighter of government waste and earmarks. The reason Palin and McCain tell this sold the jet on ebay anecdote is the same reason they flog the "I told Washington thanks, but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere. " story. It illustrates the image they want the voter to believe. It just so happens that those stories aren't true. Palin may have listed the jet three times on ebay, but she ended up selling it to a GOP donor, at a loss. Palin may have turned down that bridge, but she sure took a all of the money and spent it on other projects, and she actively campaigned in that part of Alaska as a bridge supporter. She also hired a Jack Abramoff connected lobbyist to shill for her little town: brought in $27 million of your and my tax dollars. Surely Sarah Palin remembers these kinds of things. There's a word for telling stories you know aren't true: lying. Hook 'em!
She said she put it on ebay. She did. Three times. I'm more bothered by Obama in his convention speech saying McCain would “define middle-class as someone making under five million dollars a year” when McCain meant that comment as a joke, getting a laugh and following up by saying, “I'm sure someone will take that out of context...But seriously ...”
I'll go on record and say that this is the first of several "misspeaks" that will come to pass about Ms. Sarah. Hook'em!!!
