How does one know they are ADD or ADHD? I've had conflicting information from 2 psychiatrists; one that was ready to write a script for Ritalin after spending about 10 mins with him (scary), the other explaining that for me to be ADD I would have to be "high functioning" which is rare, and didn't want to give me Ritalin. Can anyone recommmend a decent psychiatrist in Austin that knows what they are talking about and understands if I'm not gung ho about going on meds?
Try a psychologist instead. I believe they can diagnose and they won't be prescribing you anything. Also, get a hold of the DSM and see what you think of your own symptoms. Ever thought of sensory issues rather than it just being attention?
psychologists can and do identify conditions like ADD and ADHD. it may also be a type of anxiety disorder.
Midtown, you are too funny. Thanks for the responses. I love chocolate and sugar so i have to try to not eat too much of either. I have received one referral and I'm checking if he is on my insurance list.
ADD/ADHD is a real disorder, but the diagnosis is over used and has become a waste basket diagnosis for attention type problems that doctors cannot otherwise find an origin for -- the meds are quite powerful, so I'd ask for alternative therapies (diet and lifestyle changes) before jumping on the medication bandwagon. Just a thought....
If in Austin area, I'd appreciate a PM, if you get a chance, for the recommendation you received. I have been thinking about looking into this.
I gotta call BS on this one...ADD, ADHD is truly just laziness/lack of discipline. Start training for a marathon with RunTex. The structure is what ya need...
