I love Shipley, don't get me wrong. But is anyone else finding that calling him "Colt's Roommate" is both redundant and demeaning? Shipley has proven that he should be called by his real name! Ya, it's a fun fact to know, and it's fun when you joke around with it a time or two, but when it happens on every catch by Shipley!? Every TD, it's talk about their natural ESP with each other. Hell, on ESPN's "mark" (analysis of the week), it refers to him as "McCoy's roommate" when mentioning how he performed. Is it bad for me to get annoyed by this? Has anyone else noticed?
Musburger- in this household known as "Captain Obvious"- is annoying FOLKS. (Did you get that?) The first or second time I was okay with it... But yeah, by the 17th time he said it...... Like Madden, he gets a theme or a concept down and he repeats it over and over again. In the case of Shipley, he was just showing off those great Musburger research skills. Luckily, I was at the game and did not have to get annoyed during the heat of the moment. Erich
I bet Derek Lokey is jealous that he is left out of all this. That is what you get for graduating and moving on to Kansas City. Good luck Derek!!! Get off that practice squad and on the roster, k?
^^^That's very common knowledge.^^^^ But i had NO idea about McCoy and Shipley being roomies, that's crazy!!!!! Someone should tell Musburger.
Apparently that was our jumbo package on those goal line plays. I would not have known that without Musburger saying that 3+ times.
I fear that there is a third, lesser known room mate. I think these guys (announcers) take something from a fact sheet and then pretend they are part of the "family". Much like when they call Coach Stoops "Bobby" or Coach Brown "Mack". Same thing with Mr McCoy. To me many of these announcers come across as stalkers at worst and as trying to ride the coat tails of these young players success at best.
I am not in the least bit annoyed. Not only that, but you can't even begin to know the meaning of redundant unless you heard, "The only coach they've ever had" a million times. I'm referring to the late great Dallas Cowboys head coach, Tom Landry.
Well, at least their fathers aren't famous opera singers in Europe. Wonder how many languages they speak.
This reference may have evolved for the first half of the season, but I think after the OU game we might very well see an emergence of Shipley's play on the field to the point he is in the running for top receiver in the country. And be his own man -- no reference to any roommate, but the connection to Colt by way of their fathers, and both being coaches... hard to escape all of that. Media does what media does. I believe his production will get a lot more visibility with the Horns lofty ranking and prime time games -- and Jordan will be seen as a special brand of receiver with deft hands, speed, possession and quick strike scoring. I think he will move toward equal recognition. Right now I don't hear anyone comparing Colt to VY anymore. That's done. That's over. And soon it won't have to be "Colt's roommate." But traditionally the college game likes to make a big deal about who rooms together. Who's Dads knew each other, played together, and were both coaches. What I want to see is for Jordan to get another year of playing time because of what he missed due to injuries. If he continues to play the way he does, and if the Horns can run the table on these last 6 games and take the Big 12 title, I think Shipley has an even chance to grab the Belitnekof award. (spell?)
To me it's more annoying to have the camera miss plays repeatedly, while doing "family in the crowd" and sideline fluff. It is more annoying to have coaches and players names muffed. It is WAY more annoying to have them completely miss flags thrown. And then to argue incorrectly about the call.
I thought the same thing after watching the broadcast Saturday! I think the best thing for Jordan to do is move out and get his own place. It will be the only way for the nation to learn that Colt's roommate has a name.
TV media is well known for riding things in the ground. Tom Landry was the head coach from 1960 to 1988 and they kept reminding us that Tom Landry was the only head coach that the Dallas Cowboys ever had. They did that for years until they got so much public ridicule for doing it that they finally stopped. When Jerry Jones brought the Cowboys Coach Landry was fired and since then there have been six different head coaches.
When they say the word "roommate," drink! I had a similar game watching the Olympics with the name "Michael Phelps."
At one point didn't Brent tell us they grew up together and have probably been playing catch in the backyard since they were kids?
I actually thought it was hilarious when they put up that first comparison graphic for Colt and Bradford, when it was 14-10. Bradford was ahead in every category, but in a little box at the bottom it said "Roommate TD: McCoy 1-0"
I have two things to add. 1st) anytime Musburger spends talking about roomates, the less time has to attempt to say Ogbonnaya. 2nd) if they are this freaking good because they are roomates, can't they just make all the receivers sleep in the same room?
Somebody mentioned Lokey. He was Jordan's roomy before Colt moved in with 'em. I guess the announcers didn't know that, but Lokey was 'famous' enough not to be called, 'Colt's room mate'. Maybe some viewers around the country haven't seen UT this year (possible?), so the media wants to spin all the stories of background, & like someone said, they want to appear that they are in on all this. By the way, their biggest fish & deer were mounted by a coach in San Saba. Media, catch up.
