I have not been in March, but did go one year the first week of April...froze my *** off. Plenty of snow and fog. Dress appropriately if you go.

There were some nice days, but the nights were extremely windy and bitterly cold. One night it hit -5 degrees. The North Rim will still be closed in March.

I was there in early April, and the the best thing about going there at that time of year is that it's not crowded at all. Like others said though, it gets very cold at night. In fact there was some ice and snow just below the rim on the trails.

We were there in mid-April a few years ago. We flew into Phoenix, stayed with some family, then down to Tucson for a day. Next day, we drove up so we could spend some time in Sedona. Then drove to the Grand Canyon. After a day there, we drove over to Canyon de Chelly National Monument in the far, NE corner of AZ.

I was about 200 miles, but WELL worth the trip. We hooked up with tour company but it was really just a guy in his 4WD pickup. My wife and MIL were worried about it at first, but it was the coolest thing we did on the trip. It beat the hell out of the flat bed 'shake and bake' Jeeps and the guy was really cool.

It was a long way over there and a very long way back to Phoenix but I would definitely do it again.
