um, his job is to be as big and heavy as he can while still being able to move it all around. After watching the SB, I'd say he's moving pretty nicely.
Come on people. The guy is a nose tackle for the 2009 SB champs. He's listed as 6'2" and 325 lbs. If he were 6'8" he'd look buff. His job is to be unmoveable. He doesn't have to run 40 yds. He has a Longhorn tat over his heart. I don't see a problem.
Call a spade a spade...he's fat. But so are sumo wrestlers who are tremendous athletes. Amazing how on a defensive line, you could have someone look like Orkapo and someone look like Casey. He's also one hell of a NT and Super Bowl champion. Hook 'Em!
It's not about how you look, it's about how you play. For years the Cowboys had the best body in football -- Chad Hennings and the worst body in football -- Nate Newton. Wonder which one started more games and went to more Pro Bowls.?
Maybe I missed something, but the guy's a nose guard in the NFL for christssakes. Did you guys open this thread expecting the 09 hot bods of the NFL calender? Typically linemen carry a lot of weight they lose after they retire. It's necessary for his position, and it doesn't mean he's out of shape. Someone mentioned sumo wrestlers earlier, they have amazing core strength and fitness. Hampton's case is no different. He's just big boned ok?
You know...Quite a few OL and DL lose weight after leaving football. The people I always see a few years after football that shock me are the skill positions...Those guys are so used to being skinny and eating Popeyes all the time.
I'm more amazed at the fact that is probably freakin' cold and he's out there without a shirt. The dude gets the job done. So what if's an XXXXXL? They make Super Bowl rings for fat fingers too.
Take that 325 lbs with a large grain of salt. I don't have a link, but I read an article right before the game highlighting Lyle Sendlein's responsibilities managing Casey. In addition to the edge in experience, they pointed out the LS would be giving up alot of size as well. The article said while Casey was listed at 325 lbs, he was actually closer to 400. They had a great quote from Casey to the effect that his weight was secret, classified information! As to Casey's limited playing time in the bowl, he sees much less time when the Steelers are in the nickel and dime packages. Rule of thumb: "Casey gets less time in the dime!" (or, "no time"!) At any rate, congrats to big Casey on another SB ring
I remember when Akins and Hampton were the DTs at Texas, and they were #1 and #2 in the nation in either bench press or squatting, can't remember which one. Also remember how instrumental Hampton was in stopping NU in the 1996 championship game. After the game he said that NU kept coming at them, over and over, grinding, always grinding them down. And at one point he was so tired that he didn't even know where he was anymore.
