Mabey if he wasn't smoking illegal drugs, Phelps wouldn't be in this mess. Fame and fortune has a price...everybody is watching.

please. whether or not 100% of adults have done it has no bearing on the legal status of an activity. it's a completely separate issue from the one involving the guy posting the picture.

the guy shouldn't have done it.
but phelps shouldn't be complaining (and he's not).

Yeah, all of a sudden a guy isn't worthy to pimp Fruit Loops because some asshat posted a picture from a party.
What a bunch of pious hypocrites we are. Pot is not performance enhancing, not as harmful as alcohol, but is illegal. Forty percent of adults have used pot in this country, and if you eliminated those over 60, I bet the percentage would be much greater.

do you think the number of people under 50 that have smoked pot is 40%? Do you realize that every person who smoked pot at Phelps age that is 60 today was committing a felony when they took a puff?

Our drug laws are an embarassment and a stupidity that has enriched deadly gangs on our borders and destabilized countries. In reality if micheal Phlps wants to alter his mind Smoking Pot is a lot better for a performanec athlete than going out and getting blasted on booze....

Kellogg's has dropped Phelps as a cereal spokesman, in case you did not see this in the news, because of this incident.

This whole situation is a joke. How does this damage him as a role model?

I would proudly tell my kids that if they win 13 gold medals they can smoke all the grass they want.

Maybe High Times can pick him up for their next cover? Or NORML or some organization like that.

Phelps is a public figure and is held to a higher standard. Regardless of your opinion of drug laws, smoking pot is illegal and carries a stigma that companies don't want to be associated with.

And the "40% of people do it" is stupid. Reminds me of the jumping off a bridge analogy they used in the 2nd grade. Grow up.

His swimming earned him his celebrity. And his celebrity is going to earn him much more money than being a pro swimmer ever would. So his celebrity is now his livelihood, and he's an idiot for putting himself in a position for it to be damaged like this.

I can now say one thing for certain -- I am DAMNED glad that cellphone cameras/digital cameras were not around when I was 16-25 yrs old.

Folks should be able to indulge in the harmless stupid follies of youth without being skewered for it.

"OH NO! HE SMOKED WEED/GOT DRUNK/MOONED SOME PEOPLE/PEED OFF A BALCONY ETC. ETC.!"

Seriously. The number of folks how DIDN'T do SOMETHING at that age that they wouldn't want to see in published photographs . . . well, we're probably talking less than 10% of the population.

Phelps IS you and me, and almost everyone else. Maybe not weed, maybe it's something else for the rest of us. But trust me - there's SOMETHING back in your past.

The point of my post was not a moral judgment on phelps, i could care less what he does. Most people his age have probably smoked pot. He is the greatest swimmer that has ever lived.

My point is about this other guy. This culture to destroy or profit at any cost. I consider the person that took the photo is a bottom feeder of the lowest level. Sure, Phelps should not have been smoking pot, but his other dude that took the pic is an *** and an example of our sinking culture.

    and your point is valid.

god forbid there were camera phones around in the days of dean martin and frank sinatra.

think about how celebrity culture has been shifted to a fundamentally negative aspect. we WANT these people to fail so we can giggle about it and say "see, they aren't so great! they're just like us!"

well, they aren't just like us. they are famous, and every little thing they do can and will be documented. you can't expect perfection from anyone. for a kid like phelps to take a bong rip? who ******* cares?

as brisket said, would you have wanted to carry the burden of modern celebrity through your early 20s? i sure as f**k wouldn't have. i did some stupid ****, like most of the rest of you, and i'm pretty ******* glad that it wasn't documented via camera phones or tabloids.

sucks that this is the culture we are becoming.

To anybody defending him, would you go into a job interview or business meeting with your clothes reeking of pot smoke?
