It's actually obvious why they don't need to read the entire bill. All they need to do is make sure the funding for their pet projects is included and assume all the other Dems will do the same. Granted, for many of them that will take a while, but it's manageable. Most of the Republicans (all except the few Senators who were allowed to add projects in exchange for their needed vote) already know none of their projects are included so a "no" vote is easy. All this hand-wringing from a few of the Dems is just to conceal the fact that they don't really care what's in the totality of the bill. And the same from the Republicans is to point out that the Dems are ramrodding this huge partisan bill through without adequate review. Some things will never change in Washington. The Dems in Congress are making up for the last 8 years in one fell swoop in the name of "economic stimulus". And, predictably, Mr. "Pay-as-we-go" is going along with it without regard for the bipartisanship he promoted during his campaign.

Some of you just don't get it..No, matter how much common sense you use, no matter how bad this POS bill is, no matter, that the same people who said that there was nothing wrong w/ Fannie and Freddie are now the main ones crying about how bad things are. It's all about Bush.

This should be a bi-partisan effort to make sure, that only the necessary spending and tax cuts are put forth. Instead, we get, 'well Bush did it big, so we can do it bigger", and "it's all Bush's fault." Nevermind that B. Frank in '03 was saying how there was nothing wrong, w/ the housing market.link But, that was ok, he's a democrat and not Bush.

So stop wasting energy, you know the ice caps are melting, trying to talk rationally to people who are irrational. Your wasting your time. Remember.."Bush lied, People died' nothing else matters!!

you posted, "But I don't have a trusted staff of experts. I have a friend who is a great lawyer. If he volunteered to read the document, I'd happily let him and defer to his advice. "

Actually I would think Lautenberg is speaking of each senators entire office including staffers

but even an expert attorney and a team of staffers might need more than 10 hours to read it, 8 hours of which are generally considered sleep time

    This FROM the DRUDGE article
"“The American people have a right to know what’s in this bill,” Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind) told HUMAN EVENTS after the press conference. “Every member of Congress -- Republicans and Democrats -- voted to post this bill on the internet for 48 hours, 48 hours ago. We’ll see if the Democrats keep their word.”
The Democrats finally made the bill's language available around 11 p.m. Thursday, approximately 10 hours before members meet Friday to consider the bill and 38 hours short of the time promised Americans to review the bill.

RV Dems broke their promise. NO refuting that. I think and hope you'd agree that 2-3 hours is not enough time to consider all the info in this important piece of lege

Nobody needs to read this bill.

The Republicans will all vote "no". Except for Specter and the two Senators from Maine. Those 3 only vote for the bill because they were given earmarks for their home state and are concerned about re-election.

The Democrats will all vote "yes", well in the Senate at least, but not the House.

This bill is just a money grab for all of the items on a liberal "wish list" that's been collected from the past 20 years. The Dems finally control both houses of Congress and the Presidency, so they're pushing this pork through at the speed of light.

I think it's great, personally. This is the silver bullet that will give the House back to the Republicans in 2010. Then we can have a stalemate in Congress, which is what everyone should want.

6721, I'm not attacking you in any way. I am confused as to why you keep saying its drudge articles you're linking. I did mean to attack the actual web sites that published the stories you referenced.

drudgereport is a website that links articles to other websites, right? You keep calling it the drudge article but he didnt' write it anymore than you or I did --he just posted a link like you did.

Not that it is of any great importance, but nobody in Congress ever reads a bill before voting for it anyway. They are too long for the most part and are in legislaturese so the people who do the codifying can draft the needed regs appropriately.

A few people on the appropriate committee know what it says, some others read the synopses and the rest vote on what they are told by the first two collections.

Hasn't someone on here shown that there are only 70 new pages? Why keep acting as though the bulk of this bill has never been seen?

There has already been debate and votes on this bill. Stop pretending like it's an 800 page secret.

I don't have a problem with people against the bill. This hysteria over 70 new pages to a bill that has been voted on in both houses is absurd.

Has anyone in Congress said they don't know enough to cast their vote? The previous cryout was time for the American People to read the bill (which we won't do). I don't see the argument that Congress is voting in the dark.

GOPs have had time to be very specific about aspects of the bill and some of those aspects have been altered. Does anyone really think that GOPs have not had time to find their points of attack?

    Please.

NO no I posted",Both stories are off Drudge but are verifiable at other sites . " Read it. I did not credit Drudge with writing the articles I posted from where I got the articles
O FF Drudge Not BY Drudge
Now clearly you know what Drudge is so don't start now trying to back pedal.
Nowhere did I say Drudge wrote the articles. IN fact saying they were FROM drudge and then providing the direct links shows I know what Drudge it.
You and Summer didn't like the facts in the stories so you tried to discredit the facts by attacking me

Now back to the subject. Are you OK with Dems promising to post the bill for 48 hours before it comes to the floor for a vote and then stalling to post it 10 hours 8 of which are sleep hours before the 9am convening for the vote?

what? saying I don't have Adobe Reader makes somehow means to you that I am ignorant of technology?
    let's say it is so.
How ANAST does that change that the Dems lied about making the bill available 48 hours before it comes to a vote? Once again you go right to personal attacks rather than comment on the topic

    and ANAST BTW
"Yeah, me to. Technology isn't 672105475361's bag. "

that would be TOO, not to

so if Bush was doing the same things for 8 years and it has been a disaster no intelligent person would want more of the same just to even the score.

The issue, as pointed out in the OP, is there hasn't been time to read consider and debate. Read the OP again. I pointed out that no one is aying NO bill should be passed but if this is the right one let it be seen in the light of day.

If obama and pelosi really are about transparency why is this being done in secret?

Obama ran on this platform, and the bill is going to pass. Most economists think a large stimulus package is warranted, even bigger than this one, which Obama allowed to be whittled down attempting to reach out to Republicans, hoping they would support it.
It will pass either today or Monday at the latest.
The criticism is disingenuous, because the legislators have had time to study the bill over the last couple of weeks. It isn't like it was totally changed last night.
The crocodile tear club gets more humorous every day.
You all knew there would be a big stimulus bill, but you thought it would all go to large corporations and the wealthy in the form of tax cuts? That's so last year, dudes.

Well, if the document really is completely searchable, it wouldn't surprise me at this point. I've had a terrible posting day from being busy at work. No time to check **** or really think through a post before I fired it off into the intertubes.

    Oh well.

Okay, so it took me a while to write this post because I left it open and came back later (now) to check. It turns out that PDF files is mostly searchable in a cool way. The parts that were removed from the bill, even though they're in the PDF, don't show up in a search. However, this causes problems as some items that are next to these sections don't come up in searches, either. I didn't find anything I would consider politically worthy of hiding in this situation, though.

Mea culpa. Fortunately I said if this is true in my first post up there. Unfortunately I said the fact that this isn't searchable

    RV & Yo,
Are you serious? Everything you have posted about right wingers pales in comparison to this board and the national boards and blogs claiming GWB was a failure from Day 1.
If message boards and blogs were around during Reagan's days it would have been even worse and he is one of the greatest President's to ever live.
Pretty much the pot calling the kettle black.

(Forgot about the topic: The "Stimulus" bill SUCKS even worse than the stupid crap legislation GWB signed into law. Neither one of them are going to help us at all in the long run. What is the over under on a THIRD stimulus bill being debated? 6 months? )
