Anyone know or have an opinion as to why Chris Simms cannot get a better gig than 3rd string in Tennessee? The year he started for Tampa he was not that bad as I recall. I mean he did not go to the pro bowl but he was not that bad either was he?.

It seems like some teams like Minnesota or Chicago, plus a number of others, could benefit from his skills.

He would have gone farther in the playoffs that year if his receivers would have stopped dropping balls. Think Holiday Bowl against Oregon.

The free agent signing period has not started yet. He is going to get a shot next year, don't worry about that.

He was screwed over by Gruden last season. He kept him on the roster all through training camp and cut him on the last possible day when his value to other teams was lowest (not having enough time before the regular season to learn a system). If Chris had gone to Detroit or KC (and he could have), he would have started but been behind horrible lines on really bad teams. He had a full year to get his game right, he got paid, and he didn't take any tread off the tire. QB's have much longer shelf life than running backs. Chris has a lot of years in the NFL in front of him.

Detroit, New York (Jets), Minn, Chicago and several others are going to be looking to add a quarterback either through free agency or the draft. Chris is going to get a deal.

Thanks for the input "Large". Hopefully he will get a shot as a starter next year. Being a free agent will allow him to shop around for the team with the best o-line available, as well as other weapons. Wouldn't it be a hoot if he ended up in Minnesota with AD?

When Mike and Mike (ESPN mornings) were talking about Favre's retirement earlier this week, they mentioned Simms to the J-E-T-S. One of the Mikes is a Jets fan and said he would be on board with that. Said he liked Leftwich too.

Eventually Chris's perseverance has got to pay dividends.

Dude seems to have been at the wrong place at the wrong time his whole career, through no fault of his own. (And that includes his college career-he never could have pleased some "fans", sadly.)

And when the time was finally right in the pros he got a horrible injury.

Good luck and Hook Em Chris.

He will start games this season one way or another. He still has plenty of career left in him if he can hang around and stick with it.

He's just never been particularly good. In 2005, when he ended up in the starting job, he was best when he was asked to do the least. He threw for 200 yards 5 times, and the team went 2-3. In the games he threw for under 150 yards, the team went 4-0. Not saying it's all his fault, but he didn't make the team better.

Then when he was given the job in 2006, he went 0-3 before getting injured - with the team scoring 3 points total in the first two games. He also threw 7 INTs and 1 TD in those 3 games. So his most recent performance really didn't help his cause at all.

I like Chris. He's a Longhorn. Good ambassador for the program. Could have gone anywhere he wanted but chose Texas. That said, Dec 1, 2001 was my second biggest nightmare behind Jan 2, 1984. Only saving grace on Dac 1 2001 was the incredibly gritty show Major Applewhite put on.

Personally I find the two blowout losses to ou to be much more disgusting. Way worse than the Texas Stadium game. Neither nor any CS's fault.

I know. My point was that to me, personally as a fan, I found those losses to ou to trump the Colorado game in horrific content. I think those who are still jealous and mistakenly harbor angst to Simms don't pay attention very well. Those games still make my stomach sick.

The OU beatdowns set back our program more than anything else, the CU game was an afterthought played by a team that was still unsure of what it took to be physical and mentally tough. Simms performance in that game was brutal, unlike the majority of the games he played at Texas during that time. He shoulders a great deal of the criticism from those years, but we honestly had guys on that team whose attitude was just not fit for a football field. Great athletes, but players who sold out a lot of good players and gave our program a bad rap because they didn't want get off their *** and play like a tough guy.

With that said, the truth about the NFL version of Simms is he's a tough SOB who can operate within an offense and is best when he's not asked to burden a good portion of the production. In today's game that's more than enough to lead a team deep into the postseason with the right group. I know there's still Texas fans who will never let go of the mistakes he made here, but the reality is the guy is a solid and serviceable NFL QB and will probably be in the league another 5-10 years. People who want to still get their digs in on this guy has no clue how hard it is to make it in the NFL. I think some believe if you show up with a famous name and big arm, then teams will cough up a roster spot for you. Couldn't be further from the truth.

Here's to hoping a great guy who represented himself well and kept our program steady while he was here will have some great moments in his NFL career.

well I will go on record as saying I was civil and respectful about this. caca in a typhoon can be messy.

I will add: On Dec 1 2001 Texas was in a position to play for our 4th nat'l championship. Only saving grace to that day was Dec 3, 2005 in Reliant.

Simms, if given a starting role, would do just fine.

If Kerry Collins can fall bass-ackwards into a starting job with a SB contender, then surely Chris Simms can. I think it'll take a similar scenario: Simms signs as somebody's 2nd-team QB (Jets? Raiders?), then the starter gets hurt, he steps in & plays well enough to win, then gets a starting job.

Not sure Akers was to blame for 1984 (other than he was ultra conservative all season, except when he put McIvor in). Leaving Simms in for that long was clearly a mistake.
