Police are looking for answers in the murders of an elderly married couple, shot to death in their Gentilly home.

79-year-old Olander Cassimere was the pastor of a 9th Ward church. The other victim was Cassimere's 77-year-old wife, Alphathada, according to NOPD Chief Warren Riley.

Riley said that officers responded to the scene in the 5400 block of Seminary Place Sunday morning just after 8:00, after a relative of the victims reportedly found the couple's front door kicked in.

The Chief says the victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Riley, robbery did not appear to be a motive in the slayings. He said that the home had not been ransacked, and he said investigators believe the couple was not the intended target.

Chief Riley said that they do have leads in the case.

"Clearly, these two individuals were absolutely innocent," said Riley. "The person that we believe was the target was not there."

Family members say the couple would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this Friday.

"This type of murder on any day would be shocking -- two elderly people who clearly didn't deserve this, in any way -- and certainly on Mother's Day makes it even more shocking," Riley said.

Riley said that a daughter of the couple who has a mental disability was in the home but was unharmed.

I would amend your thread title to this:
I would not live in New Orleans

It's shorter, but I still think that it gets my opinion across.

I would also like to amend the thread title:

I would NEVER EVER EVER live in New Orleans.

Yeah its longer, but it really emphasizes the point.

I think some people give themselves too much credit because they've been to a gun range and have seen a few cool movies.

Really, imagine it's 2AM, and you see an armed burglar/intruder staring at you, he has a gun, yours is in the shelf next to the bed, do you think you can get it, load it, aim, shoot well before the guy can aim and shoot? What makes you mr/ sniper and the intruder a bumbling fool?

This gun owner would offer the intruder what they want and do whatever it takes to get them to leave, then call the police ASAP. I think that strategy works better more often then the arriving at the OK Corral a few minutes late strategy does.

Y'all may not be ready at 2am, but I am. The wife has her bersa and I have my sig. I have a 100 lumen flashlight on the night stand. We also have dogs to give us a heads up. I shoot about 200 rounds weekly, it's my stress relief. I don't drink or smoke so that's my habit.

I have a loaded glock 40 next to my bed. (no kids) I don't know why i bother. I"m usually drunk most nights and would sleep right through a burglary. Hell, if they wanted to kidnap me or soemthing, it would be hell on them trying to wake me up

I believe my alarm and my dogs would warn me adequately to have my 12 Ga. noisily racking as a final warning to let burglars know they are not welcome. 911 is great, but police response is a heck of a lot slower than mine. Incidentally, I know someone who is leaving a great job in West Texas to move back to N'awlins. Go figure.

This type of crime has occurred in Austin. Why is New Orleans being singled out?

Secondly, i would bet this crime occurred in a poorer neighborhood where statically these type of murders occur. I doubt posters here would find themselves living in the 9th ward.

If it wasn't for the heat, humidity and other factors, i would love to live in the French District. Random home invasions w/ murder, which are rare, would not be a factor in my decision to move there.

Most people are killed by people they know. So statistically, If you are really worried about getting murdered, you shouldn't live anywhere where you have family or friends close to you.

    Mindless trolling? ha ha.

Hey, just think about it- sure most of the folks likely to intrude a home may have some issues, but they go to the range also, they have quick reflexes also, and they have thought that you may have a dog.

The % of the time the home owner would win the shootout is not as high as the % of the time the homeowner remains alive by cooperating with the intruder.

I'm glad people here have confidence in themselves however.

I tend to agree that most of the murders in NO are pretty well contained in isolated areas. If you aren't in those areas, I don't think NO is all that much worse than anywhere else.

That doesn't mean I particularly want to live there. I'm very happy just visiting.

I would never live in new orleans, mainly because it's sinking and it's just a matter of time before mother nature finishes it off.

The Creature- I said I agree the homeowner has an advantage. Advantage does not mean you win 100% of the time however, and there are no absolutes with criminals. Some are excellent shooters, some are not.

The point I made that you missed is that your life expectancy is still higher if you choose to not partake in a game, despite having some odds in your favor.

You can respond with a post about a crime where the family was shot and claim they should have had a gun, and I can search the net and find a million more where a family was held up, cooperated, and lived.

Where I live we have had a few home invaders killed and a few residents killed. None of the residents killed in invasions in the last year (on the news) was armed. There was one man who resisted (unarmed) and was beaten but not killed. Young women who submit to armed criminals tend to turn up in landfills with the criminal's DNA in them. I have no doubt that my family and I are better off with me armed should someone invade our house. No one is asking anyone else to arm himself against his better judgment; some of us, though, trust our aim more than the kindness of home invaders.

Region, not neighborhood. I am talking about the "news radius" for the local broadcast.
