bring me the MNC, and the heisman first. Then we will talk. Thing is, "best player" arguments are really unfair. Why is it that QB's are always most likely to get "best Player" nominations while, say DL and OL (where games are usually won and lost) pretty much never get serious consideration. I think we should stick to "best QB"
My wife and I are expecting our first son on September 3rd. Right now I am pushing for the name "Colt Vincent Major" while my Aggie wife is pushing for "Bucky." Go figure...
Good topic. I think this season means exactly that much for Colt. How he performs this season and how well the team plays will determine his legacy, his overall place in Texas history, his overall place in college football history, etc. He has gotten the monkey off the back for the most part but he still has a ways to go. He hasn't won a Big 12 title and that is something that just absolutely needs to happen this year. If he doesn't do that he won't win an MNC either.
And what have Colt or Vince accomplished that James Street did not accomplish, exactly? Different styles, great talents, but very similar accomplishments, and that is only if Colt wins the NC. James Street and Vince Young played their very best at the most crucial moments, that undefinable quality of being a winner. Colt has been great, and so impressively consistent, but he hasn't won it all quite yet-I wouldn't put any of the three on a much different pedestal.
Passing - Colt > Vince Running - Colt < Vince Leadership - Colt = Vince Game Changing Ability - Colt < Vince Edge to Vince, but I still pick Earl as the best all time football player and I wonder why the name Tommy Nobis hasn't been mentioned. Nobis is the all time best defensive player as well as one of the top ten best offensive linemen at Texas. I put him at No. 2 on my all time list of UT players. So: 1. Earl 2. Nobis 3. Vince 4. Colt 5. Layne Honorable Mention: the list is too long
And if I had a choice to choose Colt "or" VY as our QB for the 2009 season, I'd pick Colt without even thinking twice. __________________________________________________ well, all i will say is that if we had vinve last year, we would not have lost to tech. the no runnng game killed us in that game last year and VY was basically unstoppable if he decided to run the ball. when vy was our qb in 2005, the games were over at halftime. we avg.'d over 50 points a game and that was basically playing a half of football. yeah, colt has some good wins and he is a great college qb, but he is not vince on the college level. that offense we had was truly unstoppable. you cannot defend a qb at that level that can run and throw. we had a few tight games last year. we beat an extremely overrated osu team in the fiesta bowl. i cant believe this is even a conversation.
Colt, as a Junior, 12-1, Fiesta Bowl Champion, #3 / #4 final ranking Vince, as a Junior, 13-0, National Championship. #1 final ranking What happens for Colt's Senior year is immaterial to this part of the discussion. Read the sig.
What I find interesting is how many people have totally forgotten some of Vince's not so world changing moments., especially early in his career when he couldn't even win the starting job. Also interesting how few are willing to mention the supporting cast that Vince was blessed with in that truly dominating O we had in '05. You should be so quick to sell Colt short, even if it is just comparing him with Vince.
Texanne, Not to be picky, but Colt threw that pick 6 in the middle of the THIRD quarter against tceh; I think that was one of about 10 things that went against us that night. The way our defense was playing, without Rak and an injured Miller, (D allowed 1 FG in 2nd half until last second TD) I agree that Crabtree's catch may not have mattered. Of ALL the passes that Colt threw last year, that int. definitely did the most damage. Without Colt though, we probably go 6-7 or 7-6 instead of 12-1!
Of course I think Colt should have already got one in 2008. Im as big a Colt fan as the next guy but give Bradford his due he had a hell of a year as well. And was just as deserving. They each had one game that wasn't up to par.
Mea culpa, GAS ... that game was a nightmare and I guess it just seemed like the int happened in the first half. My aging memory is not what it used to be.
That's one hell of a debate to be sure. If the assumptions for the 2009 season listed by the OP all come true, I would be tempted to say Colt deserves recognition as the best all-time UT QB. At the same time though, if I was forced to pick one of them to start a game for the nat'l championship, I don't see anyway I could bench VY for Colt. My head hurts now.
