Profit Margin: Health Insurance Industry Ranks #86

"President Obama: There have been reports just over the last couple of days of insurance companies making record profits, right now," Obama said during a prime-time news conference. At a time when everybody's getting hammered, they're making record profits, and premiums are going up. What's the constraint on that? ... Well, part of the way is to make sure that there's some competition out there.

MP: As the table above of Profit Margins by Industry shows (click to enlarge, data here for the most recent quarter), the industry "Health Care Plans" ranks #86 by profit margin (profits/revenue) at 3.3%. Measured by profit margin, there are 85 industries more profitable than Health Care Plans (included Cigna, Aetna, WellPoint, HealthSpring, etc.).

And isn't one reason for a lack of competition that competition for health insurance across state lines is prohibited, creating in effect 50 state health insurance "cartels."

That's after they spent 25% on administrative expenses.

What exactly is your point? That if health insurance companies aren't that profitable it means that there is no healthcare problem?

Perhaps he's pointing out that profit is not that big of a deal, even though BHO tried to demonize it...

If the profit margin is low, then there is no reason to believe that the insurance companies will not be able to compete with the government plan.

Maybe they would be ranked higher if they stopped paying people to go to town hall meetings [IMG]

That link doesn't work and the chart is too small to read.

4th and 5 - you sound like you are doing quite fine financially. however, i meant "we" in a more collective sense.

and you're proving my point that opponents are not fighting reform, they are fighting the man behind the curtain because they believe that there is a big evil end-game in mind. when you come at it from that perspective it's hard for me to believe that any sensible reform will ever satisfy you.

the goal isn't to have healthcare reform that works. it is about defeating Democrats because you've been made to believe that Democrat legislation = socialism.
