Why not try Chiles at RB?

This is just a topic for discussion, but I often thought when I saw Chiles at QB that he looked like a RB. With our need for a consistent RB, and our depth at WR, would it be a far cry for him to take a look at running back? What's you guys' take on this?

This may be a huge shocker, but the primary duty of the RB position is to pass protect one Colt McCoy.

Because he doesn't look like he can run the ball.

    Not to get serious... but...

In my layman's years of experience as a fan, it appears that it is easier to move from offense to defense, in changing roles on the field.

Also, I've begun to believe that running back is one of the most difficult positions to play, meaning to play really well.

And, if I may add this, it's extremely difficult to excel at under Greg Davis because the line play and schemes are not designed to spring a back very easily. You basically fight like hell for everything you get.

I've learned that a running back makes moves as fast and as instinctively as an elite table tennis player -- and for those people, they basically move toward a return shot before the pong ever leaves their opponents paddle.

Lastly, is ball protection, and taking the beating and hits from every direction including a dog pile on top of you, plus shoving against half a ton at a time in the line, at times.

In this offense, he'll get enough chance to act like a running back after a catch, because a lot of the patterns are designed like that. Chris O. comes to mind as a back to did well with catch & run, and Jamal Charles was damn good at it his freshman year when he had most of his opportunities at that. Put Chiles in some short patterns like that let him get a step or two...

I thought RB would have been a good fit for Chiles...or, at least, I would have liked to see how he did at RB. That seems more interesting to me than Chiles at WR.

Ive never seen so much fan support for a player with such limited ability as chiles. some people want him to play anywhere just so he can play.

We've got a shitload of RB's (none of them seniors), and Chiles is already in the top four or five WR's.

Bet we see him run the reverse a few times, maybe even throw the ball out of it.

Has Childs redshirted? Maybe he needs to take a year off and really learn how to be a WR, and change his workout regimen to fit a WR. Unless he is one of the top 5WR, then play him.

Chiles has done so well at WR in the offseason I see no reason to move him again. He needs to stay at hiscurrent position. He will have the most success there.

I agree with you Hornpharm. It appears that he is doing very well at WR and ready to rock-n-roll as per both Orangeblood and IT. [IMG]

I think Chiles is a player that benefits from space. Get him in the open and he can make something happen. Run him into a crowd and he will use his strength to plow forward. Receiver is where he should be.. maybe put him in at RB and swing him out on a pass.

Sorry, I wasn't clear on the running part. What I meant by plowing is basically what i have seen him do on the field. The defense is usually the plow and he ends up pushing back with his strength. He is not a power back by any means but uses his strength to try and get a yard or two. Hell, the guy hasn't really been on the field much in the past two years to really make to many assessments. I say he is best in open space.

I'll never understand the dissing of Chiles by some people. The kid is a great athlete, and he'll be our next Quan Cosby at WR.

Same reason we never tried Reed Boyd there. Chiles isn't a running back.

I don't care where we play him just as long as he can make a meaningful contribution to the team.

Ordinarily I wouldn't be opposed to redshirting him. However, one of our opponents cheats profusely on every play and we need as many good athletes on the field as we get to try to overcome their advantage.
