He may be the needed piece for the dance ! Hope he is playing as well as they said. Good luck J'Covan .
WOW!! This is GREAT news. Our backcourt went from one of the worst at UT in the last 20 years, to one of the deepest ever at UT. I'm very interested to see how playing time gets distributed this year. A 3 year starter (Mason) is not only looking at coming off the bench, but actually sitting there for a while, if he doesn't learn how to be more aggressive on offense. One thing is for sure, Jai, Avery, J'Covan, and Jordan won't have that problem. Damn, this team is going to be fun to watch.
I've been hoping for this news. With everything that I have heard on this board about JC, I am really hoping he succeeds on and off the court at UT. BTW This may be the best Texas team ever assembled(on paper at least). When I try telling some of my UT buddies who do not follow basketball too closely that this may be the year, all I get is that skeptical look. I can't help but think things are finally falling our way this year.
Ok so now that it's official, I can tell this story... J'Covan has been on campus a while playing pick up games and stuff with the guys. My buddy told me that J'Covan looks flat out sick. He is ferocious and attacks the rim like a madman supposedly. He said J'Covan looked really really good. I trust his opinion so this has had me excited all summer. I def think this will be Barnes' best team. Now that doesn't mean we'll go to the Final 4 (have to have luck) but it will def be his most talented team ever at Texas
If all the players that start the season are healthy and still playing come March, there's no way this team misses the FF. Book it. I've been around for awhile and the comments I'm reading on three of the four freshmen coming in are off the charts. All three may be one-and-done. Hopefully not, but they're that good. The fourth kid. Shawn Williams, is no slouch either. He's a 6'7" 215-pound sharp-shooting forward that's ranked 67th in the nation in Rivals 150. So, when you combine the kids coming in with the talent already here you've got a team that will have at least 6 future NBA players on it, perhaps as many as 8. I really hope everyone in the Austin area, not just Longhorn fans, come out to watch this team. If Coach Barnes can control the fireworks that will go off during practice, then the stuff we see on gameday will be spectacular.
J'Covan is the final piece to a very complicated and hard-to-assemble puzzle, now let's see if Barnes can put together all the pieces to concoct his masterpiece. This will be one of the most individually talented teams in the history of college basketball. I hope J'Covan can take the reins of the PG position, it would benefit us on both sides of the ball and eliminate the rather glaring weaknesses that both Balbay and Lucas possess.
Is it me, or do a lot of UT guards have J in there name? Justin, J'covan, d J , a J, t J, Jai....just saying
Correct me if I'm wrong but J'Covan now makes it 14 players on the roster for this season. What is the max that we can have on a college team? is there going to be an odd man out?
There is a max of 13 scholarships. As many as 15 may dress. Someone will have to pay his own way this year.
Barnes has assembled a great amount of talent-sometimes talented freshmen aren't great from the onset, though. We may be three deep at several positions, what are the implications? Would we run more, sub more, trade fouls more? Should be a fun year to watch the progress on the basketball team. Could this be the best ever combination of football, basketball and baseball in UT history? They all look very strong on paper.
What some people fail to realize is that we don't need all of these freshmen to step in and immediately be awesome. We still have a solid nucleus returning from last year. This is a great combination of incoming talent and returning talent. On paper, I can't imagine a better collection of players.
Running our offense through what is definitely the Big 12's most dominant big man and maybe the country's most dominant big man...instead of an erratic 5'10" shooting guard is step one. - done Step two is filling the other four spots with All Americans that will be able to go to work on a collapsing defense. - done Step three is insane depth everywhere - done. This is going to be the best team Texas has ever had. I don't have any doubt about it.
I was not bagging on Gary, I wish all of our players had GJ's work ethic and heart. Kid brings it every night and he has been through hell and back with his career so far. I agree he has a mountain to climb to play pro ball but it is reachable for him in some capacity. I was referring to the expectations many had on here that he would be all-world from day one.
