A buddy and I were having a discussion at work yesterday about American landmarks. I say the most recognizable is the Statue of Liberty, he says Mount Rushmore. Who else has some ideas? By recognizable I mean if you take a thousand average American citizens, sit them down, show them pictures of these landmarks, which would be recognized and correctly identified the most often?

Mt Rushmore was the first thing that popped into my head, but I think that the White House may be the most recognizable one. Another for consideration would be the Empire State building.

    Statue of Liberty, no question.

    Everybody knows her.

I narrowed it down to the White House and the Statue of Liberty. I'd pick the Statue of Liberty because I could see some people calling the White House the Capitol Building.

Statue of Liberty. If you walked down the street and quizzed average Americans, I would guess 25% would not be able to tell you what Mount Rushmore was, and 90% would not be able to name more than 2 people on it or tell you where it is.

Another knock on Mt Rushmore, is that I bet a decent % of the people quizzed wouldn't know in which state it's located.

Statue of Liberty. Both for Americans and foreigners.

From space, most recognizable is the Grand Canyon.

I agree with statue of liberty at the top, but no one has mentioned the Hollywood sign yet.

    #1 Statue of Liberty
    #2 Mt. Rushmore
    #3 White House

Some have said that most people couldn't tell you what state Mt. Rushmore is in, but I wouldn't be suprised if they couldn't tell you what state the other two are in, either.

Trick questions are fair game, right. After all, we need to have fun with the idiots who wouldn't know anyway.[IMG]

This is about a half mile before the bridge to the island of Florianopolis, Brazil
by the way. I didn't see a reproduction of Mount Rushmore, the White House, the Golden Gate Bridge, or especially the St. Louis arch... which many in Missouri & Illinois wouldn't be able to recognize...

No question it's Lady Liberty. Thank you France!

I'm torn, it's either the McDonald's arches, or the Wal-Mart sign.

I wrote these down before I clicked on the link:
    1) Statue of Liberty
    2) Mount Rushmore
    3) Gateway Arch

As far as the Empire State building, I get that confused with the Chrysler building. I realize they look quite different - especially when you compare them side-by-side - but to me they are similar.

I would say Statue of Liberty then Golden Gate. I think many are underestimating the number of asian tourists that pass through SF.
