so the throw might have been a poor decision, but the play call was ridiculous. we had already jumped two of those, one of which was a for sure pick 6... and GD dials it up again. however, maybe the single biggest play of the game was colt's tackle. there wasn't a horn within a mile. given, our guy didn't give him much of a juke, but if colt doesn't make that tackle, the game might be over. you'd be down four. 9 out of 10 qb's do not make that play.
I agree that the tackle was critical but the play call wasn't bad. Goodwin ran the route too deep. He should have cut in front of the OU defender and not gone behind him.
Good tackle. Terrible play call. The excuse that Goodwin was supposed to run in front of the DB is garbage as well. The DB was squatting on the slant, and in order to get under the defenders position, Goodwin would have had to run a totally flat route, basically parallel to the LOS. The BEST CASE for that route is a catch for no gain. Worst case happened. Stupid play call, bad decision to throw to that WR, and bad execution. Nice tackle though.
If we manage to make it through the rest of the season - that could well turn out to be 'the play' of the year. Funny to think about it that way.
It was 3rd and 2. The defender was playing WAY off Goodwin. Yes he jumped the route once it was thrown but if Goodwin takes one or two steps and then breaks the slant it is an easy 1st down. It doesn't appear that Goodwin was even looking at Colt either. But it doesn't matter. Colt made the tackle and Texas won.
When I saw the int I was sure it was a pick-6. Colt did an amazing job recovering to make the tackle. The play call sucked but I've come to expect it. Colt's already had other int's this year including a pick-6 on very similar plays and as the Sooner above mentioned they nearly picked a couple of them earlier in the game. Despite that GD continues to call way more of these type plays than passes across the middle where an int isn't as likely to go for 6.
Fozzy did the same thing when reynolds picked up Colt's fumble in the first. I thought he was gone for 6, & here comes Fozzy running him down from behind. Turned out that was a game saver too, as bradford was sacked (& injured) on the next play. ou ended up punting. HOOk 'EM, Texdoc
The other almost pick-sixes were on out routes. This particular play was a slant & the very same playcall that went for a TD about a quarter earlier.Except this time it was called to the other side. Like the poster above said the DB was playing off and jumped the route at the snap when Goodwin went too deep on his route. Funny how it wasn't a poor play call when it went for a TD.
you're right, it was a slant. i was at the game and didn't get to see many highlights. i thought it was an out.
Nothing unusual there; Colt played safety at his high school. Thieves are now skewered, skinned, quartered and BBQ'ed. Their season is a wreck. The focusness is now on beating the crap out of Mizzou. The also-rans just need to get out of the way and let the good teams go after the prizes.
It was a poor play call because of the situation- defending a narrow lead with 6 minutes left in the game and the defense performing lights out. Our average gain per pass was 3.5 yards, less than our average per run. This was not one of those "catch them off-balance passing because they expect us to run" plays- with an empty backfield, the OU DB knew that the only involvement he had in the play was if Colt threw to his guy, and he was praying he would.
all I wanted was three runs and a field goal to ice the game. I forgot it was 3rd and 2. 6 point lead, there's no way OU was going to score a TD. Game over.
Screw the analysis, we have been the toughest, meanest, nastiest team on the field in this rivalry for the last 5 years with a couple of unfortunate turnovers costing us our only loss under that timeframe in 2007. Your team has been looking for a place to hide in the 4th quarter the last two years more than playing to win. We are going to keep winning until that dynamic changes, regardless of the minutia that you Okies are looking to for solace. Hope is not a strategy, Sooners. Bwahahahahah!!
Wasn't that in the 1st QTR? I mean one play in the 1st qtr wasn't exactly a game decider. 4 out of 5 brother.
A great recovery by McCoy. One of the best hits all day. I was waiting for the flag for illegal substitution, 'cause I couldn't figure out how else Earl Thomas coulda got on the field so fast.
