There have been posts in recent weeks from both extremes about NU fans (best ever vs. venomous/****** against UT). I will put myself closer to the "best ever" category after the game tonight. I was at the game with my 7-year old son, and (maybe partially because a child was involved, admittedly) we had nothing but a classy response from the Husker faithful. NU played a great game and lost a closely contested battle, but their fans were cool and wished us/Big XII well in Pasadena. Very un-Aggy and very appreciated...

Agree, ive been to many a road games and husker fans are the best. Yes that includes our fans.
After the way their fans treated us before and after the game in Lincoln in '02 when Vasher int Lord in the End zone Nebraska immediately became my 2nd favorite Big 12 team.

My brother was there. he mentioned 'OU sucks' and they wouldn't have it. They just weren't interested in disparaging their opponent. However, when TIm Tebow came up, they said they wouldn't' piss on him if he was on fire.

disagree, ran into Husker fan after the game, he asked what i was smiling about, I said "happy to get a win" response was "you ******** were favored by 40" , my response was "talk to me in Pasadena" which was followed by another juvenile profanity laced tirade. Poor sports.

EPTHorn, we had the EXACT same experience after the Vasher INT. On our way out of the stadium, back to the car, back at the hotel, the restaurant, etc. Was asked many many many times "now have you folks been treated well since you have been here? if not please accept my apologies".

The first time we played them up in St. Louis (37-27) after the game an elderly gentleman that had played on the Huskers 1925 Rose Bowl team came up to me, stuck out an age weathered hand, looked my straight in the eye and said "Congratulations Son. They played like champions". I get misty eyed typing it 13 years later.

I am sure that they have some ******* fans; but as far as I am concerned the song is right, "There is NO place like Nebraska".

My experience was unfortunately fairly negative. I sat in the middle of the Husker section, and while most of the fans around me were fairly cordial throughout the first half, they became just like every other fan base once things started going against them.

Obviously every fan base ******* about calls against them (right or wrong usually), but everybody in my section was way way over the top. I've never heard so many whiny babies in my entire life. After the final FG sailed threw the uprights, me and a few other Texas fans in the area started going nuts and a bunch of Husker fans behind us started yelling at us to "shut the f**k up" over and over again at the top of his lungs. After reality kicked in and everybody started filing out of their seats, I congratulate a family in front of us and the old man just replies w/ "You didn't deserve that win at all. Bunch of cheaters" and walks away.

I'm not pretending our fans are any better, and I've certainly been around some great Husker fans...but from my experience this weekend, they aren't any different than any other school when things don't go their way.

Nebraska has the most overrated fans. It's easy to be classy when you're winning. But the last few years when Neb was down, their fans reverted to being asses like every other fan base. Now that they're back in the Big 12 championship, it's easy to be classy.

Don't be fooled by the hype.

I would have to disagree on this, for a change...The Huskers are TIRED TIRED TIRED of losing to Daddy Texas. The ones I know are crying like nobody's business, talking about how the refs cheated us into the BCS title game, "Colt sucks" talk, and alot of other trash. Some even brought up partial qualifiers and other old news....Shocking, coming from "the best fans ever"...Whatever...not all Huskers are...I don't think of them nearly as highly as I did before this time yesterday...

I agree 100% - my experience with every Husker fan has been positive. That's why I'm disappointed in Bo P's tirade. [IMG]

I've been over on Scout.com reading the NU posts, and was at the game in Dallas as well as in Lincoln (2002). I've come to the conclusion that NU still has the classiest "true" fans I've had the pleasure to meet and talk to at the games, but the NU internet message board and t-shirt fans are very aggie-ish. 98% of the fans at the games are incredibly gracious, but 75% of the internet posters would probably defend Osborne's and the Pelinis' words and actions, and still won't face reality abut the 1 second. Fortunately I don't have to read their posts, but look forward to next October in Lincoln.

Just wanted to report that the wife and I had nothing but a positive experience hanging out with Husker fans before, during, and after the game.

  14. You're not going to like my opinion but here it goes anyways....

I think as far as UT fans are concerned, I think my brethren are about to become much more venomous. If any of you make the trip up here in Oct. 2010, I suspect you won't have as nice of an experience. I'm convinced fans take on the mentality of their coach, and you and I have both seen that Pelini is true Ohio, true hard ***. I'm not saying it's going to be anything like what Columbus was in 2005 for some of you but I will say I think it could be much, much much more venomous.

UT fans have taken on the personality of Mack Brown, at least the majority that I've met either here, any other place or at games have done this. Thus, the majority are pretty nice people who for the most part respect opponents.

NU fans have been considered great through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s because they had Osborne who was as humble as could be. OU fans who once were considered great by most NU fans have now turned rotten for some in my family after they went to Norman in 2000 because Stoops is a total hard ***.

I'm just saying, come up here in 2010 and it may not be so nice. It could get somewhat nasty in fact.

    HuskerinKingwood,

I appreciate your preemptive warning, but I'm old school as are most of the Husker fans I'll interact with, so I'm pretty confident the classier Husker fans will remain classy, but wouldn't be surprised to see the younger alums to take on the Pelini personna. Fortunately the old schoolers aren't beyond gabbing the young whippersnappers by the collar when they are "disrespectful to the NU guests". I saw this several times in 2002. Reminded me of Nolan Ryan's spanking of Robin Yount for all to enjoy.

Losing brings out the worst in people, Nebraska fans apply and they are no better than anyone else. Go to Huskerboard.com if you need to see how they are really acting. It has looked like Texags since last night.

I'm sure they were proud of all of their fans that were flipping off Mack when he congratulated them at the end.

They are way better that aggy fans for sure but they are also way overrated. Like was mentioned earlier it is easier to be nice when you are winning all the time. I think our fans are among the best and most loyal.

    HNK,

I really hope you're wrong. I have a lot of respect for that fanbase based on my personal experience in Lincoln and with those who have come to Austin.

I can understand the hard feelings about some brutal history against Texas but it would be a shame if this happened just because Pelini is handling himself in such an unprofessional manner.

I hope Nebraska's class overcomes it and that the school continues to field a great team.

HNK - I think you are spot on. A buddy of mine who was at the game last night and has traveled to Lincoln previously warned me that the cordial nice treatment will not be forthcoming to Texas in 2010. He was cussed at and heard all the "cheater" comments too. Pelini is not a "hardass", but is just an ******* from Ohio, just like Stoops and Meyer. Husker fans should be embarrassed by his behavior.

The Husker fans I saw after the game were either silent or bitter; no one I saw wearing red was in a congratulatory "Hey, what a great game" mood. I'm betting most of that had to do not with the fact that Nebraska lost, but with how Nebraska lost. The clock hit double zeroes, Nebraska thought they had won, and their bench & photographers stormed the field, only to have one second be put back on the clock and the win taken away on a field goal. If that happened to my team, I'd be pretty upset, too.

I would be very cautious to judge a fan base over a message board. It is easy to make ridiculous claims and personal attacks behind a username. From what I hear NU fans in person are top notch; that's probably a more accurate judge.

The younger the fan, the more likely to be a jackass, but I'd agree that the sudden swing had to be a kick in the nuts.

I had a couple of bad experiences at the 1999 big 12 championship game from the husker fans. I really believe they hate us more than any other team especially after we keep beating them. Maybe they are on their better behavior at home or against other teams but I don't see this great friendly fan base. We are becoming bitter rivals and this is what happens over time with the Big 12 and is good for the conference. I respect them as I do all of our opponents except for aggy.

I didn't sit near any Husker fans at the game, but it seems like everytime they showed a Nebraska crowd shot, there were several people flashing the upside-down Horns sign. That's the kind of stuff I expect from Oklahoma fans, not from fans who consider themselves "classy."

I had huskers all around me. When they did the horns down, they were holding their fingers wrong and I showed them how to do it correctly. I told them if they were going to do the horns down sign, do it right. they were all good natured to us.

On the shuttle to the hotel, one husker told me I needed to go to confession in the morning.
