I can't see Leach taking a step back. I think he will wait around until someone offers him a HC gig. That said, I know if I was Nebraska, I'd be salivating at the prospect of having Leach on board.
just lost the ability to discipline their players No they don't lose disclipline they first lose respect. Once that's gone everything else just fall's by the waist side.
Hal Mumme route at best: go back to fcs or d-2 and hope to get a new Mexico state type job at some point. That old kentucky staff was full of mental patients, which is why they can't get big schools interested in them anymore.
Another angle here is that regardless of the facts, any college taking on ML is taking on a huge liability. Any injuries to anyone on the team will be under a microscope. God forbid a player were to be seriously injured under an ML. Attorneys will be lining up to sue the program based on ML's "history of wrecklessness with players health".
There's been a lot of heat put on the kid in this situation, but I don't think it's warranted. After James was put in the room/closet, he and his family went to the athletic director, not ESPN. Then they waited, still not going to ESPN. Then the school suspended Leach, not the kid. Then (if you believe the AD), the school tried to talk to Leach, but Leach wasn't having it. Then, the school fired Leach, not the kid. If James is faking an injury, then don't let him practice/play. That's the appropriate punishment. If James is not faking an injury, then he should be sitting either with every other injured player or some other appropriate place.
Actually, I've heard Coker is hanging by a thread at UTEP. Wouldn't surprise me to see Leach end up there, as they seem willing to hire coaches with "issues." But I agree with those who say he won't get a gig at a big BCS-conf. program. His name is poison right now.
How many years will Snyder realistically be at KSU? That's a school in the B12 that I could see Leach at.
After viewing the video of Leach's comments following his firing and the fact that he sued his employer before being fired, Leach will be lucky if he is a head coach at a minor Division I school. My best guess is no head coaching job, at least not next year. He really screwed himself.
Indiana would jump at a guy like Leach in a NYC minute if (and most likely, when) they decide that Bill Lynch cannot get them to the 7 win plateau that school would delight in. Leach could work wonders in a state school like IU that has no real football expectations nor aspirations. Indiana put money into facilities and now sort of hopes for routine minor bowl status. Leach could deliver that no doubt, and there are plenty of bars in Bloomington!
State schools are problematic because approvals have to be in place for Leach to be hired and state schools tend to be a little more sensitive. Private schools would be easier for Leach if he wants a gig right away. I think it is very possible that Briles leaves Baylor for Alma Mater TTU and then Baylor hires Leach after convincing Leach to say some nice things and get some positive press. I doubt Leach thinks highly of Baylor but I think he may have received a wake up call of sorts here (realizing he is not as desirable as he thinks) and I am convinced that he is the type of guy who would like nothing more than the chance to stick it to Kent, Jim and Gerald every year.
Good God, man, are you daft? Leach at Bible Aggy? He would SO make fun of Baylor's Baptist traditions (no drinking, no dancing, no sex). I can't think of a worse combination than Mike Leach and Bsylor. They don't believe in pirates. or bawdy beer wenches.
Yeah, Leach to Baylor would be a TIME BOMB! I can't think of a worse match. If you think that Leach won't be coaching in a BCS conference within 2 years, then you aren't thinking clearly. Teams want to win. Leach brought Tech more bowl victories than they had in their all time history. Combine that with what is obviously a railroad firing, and some hungry program will overlook the Quirky personality and even the lawsuits. Nuehisal ended up at UCLA for christs sakes- and what that guy did to CU was way worse than Leach. Unfortunately, I don't see a BCS school stepping forward within the next 3 months because of the constant bad press from e-spin. As soon as the story gets old and people get tired of hearing about it- a school will scoop him up. After reading this thread Indiana or WSU both sound like interesting matches. Countryside school in big conferences (sounds like Tech)
Leach did not get fired for punishing James. He got put in the corner for punishing a player who had a medical condition. If he had sent him to his dorm or told him to take the week off there would have been no problem and he would not have been sent to the corner. He has a history of telling the school to screw off and is not liked by the school. He has tried repeatedly to bail from there and they did nothing to stop him. For some reason nobody has wanted to hire him. We don't know why though we can guess. When he gets sent to the corner he then takes one of two available approaches: he can either apologize and say he will let the doctors handle such matters in the future (I know apologizing is beyond contemplation for some of you guys but in the rest of the world it is known to do wonders; I have done it when I did not really think I had done anything wrong; It always works well and I have never been fired for doing it) or you can tell the boss to go piss up a rope and file a lawsuit. How many of you have ever been sued by an employee? How did you feel about it? Tech could have then said it was sorry and it would never make such a mistake again or it can fire him. There really was no other choice, was there? Neither Gerald Myers or Kent Hance have ever before displayed any signs of lunacy and so my assumption is that the prospect of just letting the Pirate slide on this and saying they were sorry was not a viable alternative. Leach has been looking to get fired almost since the day he showed up there and he finally pulled it off. AS for his getting another good job, think about Michael Cimino and the Heaven's Gate disaster in Hollywood. He won an Oscar for the Deer Hunter and then wrecked United Artists. How many films of his have you seen in the last 25 years? Leach is toast.
