When no. 2 actually means something

OK, nobody wants to finish second. But I remember telling someone last week that there is no way we stay No. 2 if we lose the title game. Thinking back, I don't ever remember a No. 2 team losing in the title game (or in their final bowl game or whenever) and remaining No. 2. I think you had some No. 1 teams that only dropped one slot, but far as I can remember the No. 2 team always drops at least one spot and usually two or three.

Seems to me that's a pretty strong compliment, especially considering the number of people who didn't seem to think we deserved to be there, or that we couldn't match up with either Alabama OR Florida. I fully expected Fla. to pass us up, so I think we actually gained some respect with that performance.

Our true freshman QB put up more points on the vaunted Bama defense than Tim Tebow. That should've ended any discussion of Florida being ranked higher than Texas.

It's been mentioned in other threads, but this #2 ranking is more than just a compliment -- it could be a huge help come next Fall's pre-season rankings.

It's a shame, but it really does matter where you start in the polls. And, while some of the thinking behind that ranking has to focus on a team quarterbacked by Colt McCoy, a lot of it has to do with the potential GG showed.

I felt the same about being rated no 2 in the post season poll.

It shows the country has tremendous respect for our program, esp considering all the hype this season for Tebow and Fla program.

I thought it was a nice nod of respect. I did not expect it. I wouldn't have been surprised at all if we had dropped to #4 below Florida and Boise. That's usually how the idiots out there vote things.

Plus it didn't hurt that both Cinc. and Tcu got smacked in the process...If either win they would have jumped us in my opinon. Im surprised Boise didn't but they sure wouldn't want a non BCS team to finish second.

do YOU think boise is the second best team in the country?

No i don't but they had the ranking and took care of business and should have gotten the ranking. If it had been a BCS school they would have been number 2. Without a playoff this is the bs we deal with.

I'm very surprised we got #2 but am very pleased that we did. We deserve it. I wonder if Bama fans agree with that. I'm sure they do. We did better against them with a backup quarterback than Florida did with Tebow.

The losing team in the BCS championship has been ranked 2nd in the final AP poll in

    1999
    2002
    2005
    2006
    2009

It happens more than you think.
