I know a fair number of union democrats who are against gay marriage. This means to me that for a fair number of Democrats, gay marriage isn't the main voting criteria. I know as a conservative, gay marriage isn't one of my top 50 reasons to vote for a candidate. I'll be happy with whatever the country decides as long as it doesn't cost.

Can somebody in a coherent paragraph make some kind of sensible arguement against gay marriage?

    Anyone?

    Coel,

I have no issue with your last post...seems completely logical. In answer, I would say it is a "rights" issue. A straight couple that is married has rights in this country. There are many of them...but to name just a few....the right to file a joint return....the right of inheritance....the right to make medical decisions....the right to receive social security benefits, the right to give citizenship to a spouse, etc. So, why can't a gay couple receive the same rights?

Also, your suggestion that rights not delineated in the Bill of Rights are up to the will of the people is so wrong it's laughable. Haha.

    Questions for the ages:

    Why can't a dude marry a dude?

Why can't a bull dike marry a lipstick lesbian?

Why don't people have the right of polygamy?

If marriage is a right, is it fair that it is taxed?

    Why can't a guy marry a duck, a dog or a ferret?

I jest. In all honesty, I think a stronger constitutional argument could be made that the government should honor or deny no type of marriage and that marriage should be a purely private sector institution. People who want to marry can go to a church that will do it. And the real bible based churches will clearly separate themselves from the chaff.

I think gay and lesbian people should have every civil right that straight people have (legal uniions or whatever you call it) but they need to leave marriage alone. Marriage is a sacrament. Of course, gay and lesbian people don't care what I think, so there you have it.

Oilfield - So equal status, but a separate name? What legal basis do we have to do that? Has it worked when we've tried it before?
