District 9 is nominated for best picture. The movie sucked imo. I guess if you create a movie that is a metaphor for apartheid you get the automatic nomination.

i thought it was pretty damn good. it was funny at times, and serious at times. jackson almost gets automatic approval from me, so i was looking forward to this.

it wasn't what i expected, at all.... but i thought it was a solid 4 star.

not sure about best picture.... but maybe best director.

    damn prawns.

Best picture is indeed a stretch, but so is Up in the Air in my opinion. That was a run of the mill chick flick.

Had it only been five movies:
    Inglourious Basterds
    Avatar
    The Hurt Locker
    Up in the Air
    Precious/A Serious Man

I am just disgusted that Avatar got 9 nominations. Then again, it didn't get the 14 that James Cameron's last film, Titanic, did. [IMG]

Also, why the heck did they nominate 10 films for best picture? That severely decreased the weight of the nomination. I don't feel like that many good films came out last year in the first place, so being one of 10 films nominated doesn't seem like much of an honor.

I could be and likely am really wrong but Apartheid would have been if the Prawns were in charge, being the minority, right? This was more like slavery and about the human condition or ways of dealing with things. That it happened in South Africa is pretty much the only thing tied in with Apartheid, right? I guess that the country or parts of it are being run by warlords and that crime is rampant there (even though it was in the District itself) is true and a result of Apartheid.

This was a great film, imho.
