I wrote the NCAA and complained but I supposed many others did also as it was getting totally out of hand. The NCAA has banned anything but face black under the eyes. The grease paint was supposed to reduced glare and so many players had more shiny silver markings than face black. Maybe Tbone was the last straw. Linkeypo
Fine with me. I thought the little Longhorn on the eyeblack looked kinda gay anyway.* It reminded me of those little face tatoos that guys shouldn't be caught wearing.** * Apologies to Colt ** Apologies to guys 1st grade and under
I think I like this. It was one thing to have your area code printed, but as usual, once somebody does something the next guy has to out-do him, and on and on... It got out of hand.
Good job there guy. I guess any form of expression must be banned so that someone doesn't get their little feelings hurt. This ban would include the eye black stickers with longhorn logos Colt wore.
I don't get it. Sure, I find it silly too, but WHY does this have to be BANNED? Did it detract fro the sport? Was it unsportsman-like? NO Were someone's feelings hurt? was someone having too much fun with it? Maybe, but who gives a f**k. Ridiculous.
oh gee **** hell obviously the horns will fall apart w/out the little longhorn sticker under their eyes
It's not a matter of personal expression. The face black was suposed to serve a purpose and when they changed the color from mostly black to mostly silver with all kinds of inappropriate messages being place there. Gee give them a marker and let them decorate their helments with biblical passages or gang symbols. Tebone was probably the biggest motivator. Can anyone remember when there was an invocation before a football game?
Meanwhile, the NCAA's byzantine book of arbitrary rules just got bigger and more arbitrary and as usual its aimed at the kids having too much fun, and meanwhile they can't even enforce some of the obvious rules that the grown-ups in this sport are supposed to adhere to, such as "Don't pay your athletes", that are REALLY damaging the sport. I guess when I watch football, I am too busy enjoying the game to get annoyed by this periphery stuff.
I don't know if it needs a banning, but eye black should be eye black. I think I started a thread here about those idiotic messages and such.
Your just a tattle tell. That is such a lame thing to hate on. It was just your duty to run and snitch huh?
Eyeblack used to be called "lampblack," and it was literally soot taken from a lamp. I am on board with this ban, largely because the black patches have evolved into a soapbox rather than serving the purpose for which they were intended -- to keep the athletes from suffering from too much glare.
So let me get this straight... you can't wear any messages on the under eye patches... but even if Reggie Bush took gobs of money while at USC no real sanctions will occur, and Bama can win a National Title while on major penalty from major infractions......... NCAA is as backwards as our Congress.
It needed to be done as it could be considered part of the team "uniform" and players were using it to call attention to themselves and being "different" from the team. But this will probably lead to the next rule which will be the "amount of square inches the paint can be applied to" rule because I see players painting their whole face (ala movie The Program) to call attention to themselves.
I always thought putting stuff on the eye black was stupid. Its there to reduce glare, adding a bright logo or message increases glare right where you don't want it. Not sure we needed a rule, but I am glad we won't see that stuff anymore.
If a player put something like "Glory to Allah" on his eye black, I'm pretty sure that there'd be some fans (particularly in the SEC) that would have a problem with it. I'm just sayin'....
I would rather have a "no WWF makeup" rule. The Tech dork pissed me off more than any eye black messages. Not that I would want to hinder his right to make a complete *** of himself.
Funny/sad/scary how to most people "There ought to be a rule that bans X and enforces penalties for it" is such a simple extension of "I personally think X is a dumb idea"
Thank goodness the NCAA is working on the real issues plaguing college football instead of setting up a playoffs system.
This may very well have been out of hand. I am certainly no fan of the cute little messages. But, as with most things it only becomes a big deal when people make it a big deal. Some guys don’t use eye black. Some do. Some use it to paint messages on their face. So? I know from personal experience that young men do lots of stupid things. If this was as bad as it ever got the world would be a better place. I have no idea why this has to be an NCAA rule. What are they going to do when they have messages shaved in their hair? Are they going to ban tattoos? I would much rather the NCAA got down to serious issues – like making sure college athletes stopped wearing those stupid baggy pants, and that they only listened to good music like we had in the 60s and 70s.
Some of you are acting shocked that the NCAA is being this heavy-handed. You must not remember this complete douchbag: I also ran across this: Classy.
This is stupid. Why not ban tattoos? That's a statement made on their skin? I could tattoo a bible verse on my forearm, but not put it under my eye? Does anyone not see how stupid this is? I mean really. I may or may not like the little eye thingy, but it's none of my friggin business.
no visible tattoos with crosses either. don't want to get any panties in a twist. people ***** about too much. and then those people ***** because someone bitched about them.
