Could Durant be the greatest BB player ever?

I know, I know, tap the brakes!

But here he is, in his third season, 21 years old, almost leading the league in scoring, raising his rebounding, being mentioned as in the MVP talk, raising his rebounding substantially, improving his defense, lifting his team into the playoffs, etc. and having a great work ethic and teachability to become even better. If he scores 25 tonight he will have done something that no one except Jordan has done (score 25 points in 28 straight games).

Very impressive in 2 1/2 seasons!

    Just sayin'

Of course, at the same age, James was doing similar things only with a lot more assists and fewer turnovers.

Still, think we'd be 7-5 in conference if he was still around?

True about LaBron, but has LaBron had any series of months like KD has had where he seems to be getting better and better each month?

I think that, generally speaking, talk of being the greatest is to be left to drunken slurring as there is usually no good way to assess a ranking.

I think that it is way too early to say anything about Durant other than 1)he is good and has a chance to get better, 2) he is on an impressive streak of production right now 3) he makes his team better. He deserves all of the accolades he is getting and the MVP talk is reasonable.

All time best? Maybe he will be viewed in that light one day, but he may also be thought of a George Gervin in 30 years, which is to say, not very much thought of at all.

He is a bad mutha at this point.

I could see him being the most dynamic scorer. Not sure he has the defense to be the best overall player. Regardless, he's a monster.

the #1 George Gervin fan in the metroplex, Craig Miller, was doing the comparison a couple of months ago. He definitely sees Durant as comparable to Gervin. I agree, except I think Kevin might be getting more than the 6 or so rebounds that Gervin got.

You could do a lot worse than be compared to Gervin!

and after looking it up, Durant is on a pace to match George's third best season ever scoring, 29.6. But Gervin only averaged 5.0 rebounds, compared to KD's 7. Also, as skinny as KD is, he is thick compared to Gervin. 180 pounds compared to KD 230.(or is that a slightly inflated figure?)

So, considering KD is only 21, he is far ahead of Gervin in terms of physically maturing and scoring. Gervin hit his scoring peak in his late 20s, like most players, I would think.

i think the guy's pretty good, i'll agree with you when he gets at least 6 championships.

vince young on the other hand is the greatest player (and probably person who ever lived) hands down. period. finito.

Gervin was great and, within the state of Texas and amongst those who really pay attention, he is remembered fondly. But he doesn't ring bells when 'greatest of all time' is on the block. Feeling the need to mention Billy Paulson with him makes my point. Relegated. That said, Durant is not the pure shooter that Gervin was, but he is much more versatile at his point. We'll see how he matures. He is a handful.

He's not even the greatest right now. Dont get me wrong, I go to some of the games and he has really refreshed my attitude about the NBA, but there are a few guys out there now and in the past who would have something to say about that.

Chamberlain, Bird , Magic, Michael, Lebron, Carmelo, Kobe

That list starts with Bill Russell!

    Dr J
    Michael Jordan

Now the argument begins with all the rest - Chamberlin, Alcindor, Bird, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, et al

Not at all suggesting he is the best now. Apologize for the confusion.

Just suggesting that if he continues to improve as much as he has this year that he will be amazing in a couple more years and so may be in the conversation ASSUMING he stays at a high level for a long time.

    Kevin is good.

I kinda liked Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and Wilt Chamberlain, myself.

and he might be the 2nd fastest/youngest player to 10,000 points, etc. behind Lebron.

He does actually get a decent amount of rebounds also. 7 a game is nothing to sneeze at.
