Making dog farts less deadly

We adopted a dog from our local pound, a very sweet-natured pointer mix approximately a year old. We have had her about 3 weeks and there are no regrets except that this doggie has the worst-smelling flatus known to mankind. We have had dogs before and are used to the nasal hair-curling power of canine toots, but this dog could melt the steel plates off a battleship. Obviously "what goes in eventually comes out", so we're thinking the type of dog food we are giving her may be part of the problem. She gets fed Eukanubna, but we also give her a plain rawhide chew-bone daily and a "dental bone" sold by Costco that is supposed to help prevent/reduce tartar & plaque. And every time she potties outside (I am in the process of housebreaking her) I reward her with a portion of Costco's version of Milk-Bone dog biscuits. So...

Anyone out there have a suggestion as to a different diet or different treats that might help save the olfactory nerves of Mr. & Mrs. bevo barry? She has no GI problems: Poops once a day, well formed.

    Chlorophyll supplements? Activated charcoal?

Experiment with her diet. Take one of items you listed out for a week at a time and see if it makes it any better. If after a week, take something else out. Rinse and repeat until hopefully you find the cause. If not, it just might be her and something you've got to live with. [IMG]

Try one of the other premium foods, might make a difference. Cut out table food treats if she gets them. Try giving her a little buttermilk for a few days, builds up the healthy bacteria in the digestive system. She may have had an ailment you don't know about in her past.

I bet its the eukanuba. My dog does this as well. since your dog is young I would switch to a better food. My dog is old and used to eukanuba so I'm stuck with it. if you are in austin go to somewhere like bark and purr to get a better food

I feed my Lab puppy really good food (Innova) and his farts are absolutely atrocious. I'd switch his food but I just weaned him off of the Purina Pro Plan that the breeder was feeding him... [IMG]

Both of my boxers have this type of gas. I was told it's a breed thing. However, the rescue place said if you mix a dollop of yogurt in the food it would help. It kind of helps, but I got too lazy to do it. Now I just fart right back at them in self defense.

Our Bostons eat a lamb and rice mix at the recommendation of their vet. Bostons are notorious flatulators.

It's not 100%, but it's better than the regulat stuff.

I believe James Herriot addressed this in "All Creatures Great and Small." Sadly, he did not find a cure for a boxer's horrific gas, but he did find him an owner who had lost his sense of smell. Match made in heaven.

Iams and Eukenuba are TERRIBLE foods! Switch foods!!

BUT-- we had this problem w/ our big dog a couple months back. It got so bad that I finally went to Bark and Purr and asked if they had something to make doggie farts go away. The owner gave me a sample of this stuff-- don't know what it's called though-- that's an herbal remedy that you put on their food. She guarenteed me it would work. I thought, whatever, free sample.

This stuff works like a charm. As soon as she ate the food, no more farts. It costs about 20 bucks-- but that;s for a can that should last ages and ages, and is worth every freaking penny.

Ask the folks at Bark and Purr-- they'll be able to tell you what it is.

I can't remember what it's called. When my dog's farts got really bad, (like, it had been going on constantly for more than a week, worse by 50times than ever before,) I went in and talked to the owner-- I was all embarrassed. She just laughed and gave me a sample and promised it would work. It did, so I never went back and bought it because we never needed it again.

After she gave you the sample you should have asked her if it was safe for humans.

I use Eukanuba dry and never had problems. Dog is sick and Dr. said wet food would help absorption of medicine, so I have been using Eukanuba wet. It is 100000000000000 times worse.

I can't wait to go back to the dry.
