The Texans currently hold the twentieth pick in the first round of the NFL draft. There stated needs: Interior Defensive Linemen, cornerback, running back, interior offensive linemen, free safety Who is likely to be available and worthy of a number 20 first round slot? worthy cornerbacks - none at #20 worthy Defensive Lineman - probably not at 20 worthy offensive Lineman - nope RB - Ryan Matthews, Fresno State FS - Earl Thomas, Texas Assuming both Matthews and Thomas are available, who would you take? The Texans already have Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats, Arian Foster and Kris Brown as RB's - maybe none will be hall-of-famers but Slaton, Moats and Foster are all certainly serviceable. Who do they have current at safety? They have Bernard Pollard as strong safety assuming they resign him as a restricted free agent, and (Dominque Barber, Troy Nolan, John Busing and Eugene Wilson) as the Ole Quartet. Earl Thomas and Bernard Pollard as a tandem would be an instant major upgrade to the Texans' defense. Add a pair of serviceable cornerbacks and possibly another defensive tackle and that defense might be ready for greatness! Again, if Earl Thomas is still on the board at #20, who do the Texans take? God forbid, might they actually draft a Texas Longhorn with a significant draft pick?
I'll climb out on a limb and say the Texans won't use their first pick on Patrick Robinson. There are too many similar quality corners that will be available in the second and third round.
I think they'd take him for sure. They usually draft D in the first round. I just think someone else is going to recognize that he's worth taking before #20, which would suck.
Trade up a little to get a guy like Earl. With Pollard and Thomas back there, the backfield would be shored up quick.
The curse of Vince that Kubiak keeps ignoring is alive and well. Have any of you noticed how the Texans have been trying to cover their ***? They've drafted heavily on the defensive side, and brought in a *hitload of free agent DL.'s. If Mario Williams was worthy of the #1 pick why was all this necessary?
Mario Williams is a defensive end. Where the Texans have consistently failed is at Defensive tackle: Amobi Okoye, Travis Johnson, etc., Mario isn't the problem, the problem is that the Texans simply do not have a quality run stuffing defensive tackle. You can't blame Mario Williams for that.
Taking Thomas should be an absolute slam dunk for the Texans, which is why the NFL's aggy will go for Matthews, who'll look just as lost as the rest of Houston's running backs.
Kubiag doesn't have a clue who to draft, he proved that when he passed on Vince. The team in Houston is cursed by the Curse of the Vince. I'm not sure if firing Kubiag would rid them of such a powerful curse, of course it's worth a try, but I doubt it would help, certainly wouldn't hurt.
Mario is not the problem, the problem is the team in Houston is cursed. Firing Kubiag would probably do no good at this point, of course it certainly couldn't hurt anything. The Curse of the Vince continues.
how much of the decision not to draft vince was really on kubiak? wouldnt that be more of a front office decision?
On the bright side, the Curse of the Bambino didn't last forever. The team in Houston still has a shot, they just need to wait another 70 or so years.
Kubiag came into Houston and was basically given Carte Blanche on who to pick with the first pick. He cast his lot with a head case at quarterback and went with Mario Williams to anchor the defense. Mario's not a bad choice, but Vince was a once-in-a-lifetime player, even if he did play in burnt orange, a color Kubiag can't stand. It's that track record that leads me to believe that Kubiag would never go for drafting a Longhorn first, even if it made more sense than any other move. The aggy in him will always just say no.
No one said Kubiag isn't a NFL coach, he just doesn't happen to be a very good one. Future insurance salesman written all over him. the curse of the vince from 06 since
Schaub's okay, when he's not injured. The fact that Vince could come back with the kind of year he had last year after the problems he's had in Nashville makes him special. A lot of other players would have taken the easy way out and chucked their career. No one has said Vince is Peyton Manning, but at the time he was drafted, with his Texas ties and the excitement from his last college year, and being a hometown Houston guy, he was the best possible drawing card for a Houston team that frankly hasn't had many drawing cards since their inception. Vince could have given them the same kind of popularity bump that Earl gave the Oilers, AND Vince has the talent to have succeeded in Houston. Burnt orange blinders or not, I'm convinced the Texans made the wrong call. I'm having trouble seeing Kubiag as anything more than a competent offensive coordinator. NFL head coach? He still has a lot to prove.
