Has anyone seen this? I recorded it because I like his Europe show, and although he is kind of nerdy, I like to see all the places he goes. Anyway, Iran is kind hard to get into, so I thought I would take look at Rick Steve’s version. He does a little history lesson on Iran and is very kind to them, keeping it non-political as much as possible. However, when he actually talks to the Iranians……. So embarrassing. He changes his voice to some really weird child like version of his own voice, complete with some weird little accent that he doesn’t even have. I think he thinks he is communicatingwith a deaf person or something, but even then it is insulting to deaf people. All the people he spoke with speak perfect English almost. Many with hardly even an accent, but he completely dismisses this.... even after he has spoken to many of them and sounds like he is trying to communicate with a 7 year old that doesn't speak english. It is hard to explain, and you kind of have to see it. But I could tell the Iranians were looking at him like he was a complete douchebag. i had to turn it off because it was making more tense than a curb your enthusiasm episode.
I would love to visit Iran. Some of the most interesting people i have ever talked to were from Iran. They preferred to be called "Persian" and not "Iranian" interestingly.
One of my best friends and a former room mate from D.C. is Persian. I was basically adopted by his family as their own and had dozens and dozens of Persian friends. Beautiful people, beautiful culture and their food is wonderful too. I very much await a day it is safe to travel and visit that country as a U.S. citizen. The goings on now make me sad. A friend of mine currently a grad student at UT is from Tehran. His brother and many friends are very active in the student movement and protests. Some have been arrested with a couple not heard from again. His brother feeds him a lot of information when he can. One brother has recently come to the States and is studying in New York. He also feeds info to my friend who then provides me with it. As usual it is amazing the content and quantity we don't get in the U.S. for one reason or another. Sad, so sad. I hope for a pleasant conclusion soon. There are two Persian places to get food here in Austin that I know of. There is Alborz and Pars Deli. Alborz is on W. Anderson Lane and has belly dancing. It's more of a sit down place. The Link Pars Deli has seats as well but is also a market you can buy items with the tables scattered about. I love this place. It's on Burnet just south of 183 in a shopping center. I'd love to be able to go to a lot of these places, but even my friends that are from there are hesitant to go right now.
Saw that show and loved the locations. Would really like to visit. As for Steves -- yes he is a goof -- but he does have really good advice. Very helpful to cross-reference as to what one sees in guide books. the fact that it is visual medium really helps one decide if they want to visit (i.e. Persepolis, Shiraz).
It was an odd episode and I normally really like his show. His conversations with the people were just so corny and weird.
I think he was being overly careful on what to ask/talk about ... it was as if he were walking on eggshells. He did have a "state" escort whose presence was not shown during any filming. re: the comment about women of Persian descent ...
