I actually really liked last night's episode. I loved James/Miles as partners and Charlotte back in the mix..

So is Widmore a good guy or is he just another bad guy who wants control of the island?

I was disappointed in "Recon". It didn't advance the main story.

I was particularly frustrated that the MiB engaged Sawyer and Kate in heart to heart conversations, even offering hints at his past, like "I had a mother once" and "I'm not a dead man" and not once did Sawyer or Kate ask him anything pertinent, like "Who are you?" or "What are you?" or "How'd you get to be this way if you were once a man". They just shrugged it off and went on about their business! It didn't seem like a reaction a normal person would have.

I decided I'm past the point of expecting or even hoping for any real answers and just enjoying the last 10 episodes for whatever they are...

Next week's episode, "Ab Aeterno", which I read on Lostpedia means "Since the Begining of Time" is the backstory on Richard Alpert. That's the one that I want to see. In the previews he's holding his hands up (he's out in the jungle) and says, "this is not what it appears to be". If we don't at least start to see the Island's true purpose/meaning after that one I doubt that we ever will.

I thought it was a good setup for a big fight between MiB & Whidmore.

Is Anthony Cooper not Locke's real father? In the flash-sideways, the "Locke" episode made it seem like his father was a nice guy who had a decent relationship with Locke.

James is going to do what he does, best: set up an elaborate con. Ideally, he gets both the MIB and Widmore killed, while getting the rest of them off the island on the sub.

The answer to whether Whidmore is a bad guy or not probably depends on your perspective. I don't think he's a bad guy in the sense that he's evil and must be thwarted in order for good to triumph. I think he's very much like Ben in that he was at one time chosen by the island, and his own ambition tended to drive him to try and control things. He has never actually said what he wants to do with the island, and he claims he wants to protect it - and honestly, I could see anyone believing that leaving the island in Ben's hands would not be a good thing.

So to answer the question: arrogant, self-willed and willing to run over you with a steamroller to get what he wants? Yeah probably? Nemesis of the island? I don't think so.

why all of a sudden is Widmore there for Flocke/smoke monster (as was suggested by Sawyer)? I thought he just wanted to get back to the island? Now he wants to kill the smoke monster?

Re: Anthony Cooper and Locke in the flash sideways: In "The Substitute" Locke had a picture of he and Cooper on his cubicle wall when he got back from Australia, so it appears they have a better relationship in the flash side-ways-- at this point, at least.
