Horns already up 2 breaks at number 2 doubles 4-0. Other two doubles are on serve at 1-2 and 3-2 respectively early..
Corrie and Damico take #2 doubles 8-2. Up 7-4 at number 3 doubles. Number 1 doubles is up a break 6-4. Doubles point today is huge so if either 1 or 3 holds on Texas gets point.
BTW, this match is for a lot more than the point in the Lone Star Showdown. Both teams are unbeaten in conference. A&M would clinch the outright title. Texas would clinch at least a tie, with a chance to win the conference outright against Nebraska Sunday.
Andersen/Mladenov win at number 3 doubles 8-5 and Texas takes the doubles point. Kutrovsky and Zavala are up a break at 7-6 in number one doubles. That is a matchup of two doubles teams both ranked in top 6.
Two top ten teams, Texas at 3 and Aggy at 9 so both are playing for conference title and seeding at national tournament. Singles matchups to follow once number one doubles ends. And it just did with Kutrovsky/Zavala pulling off the upset 8-6. Texas sweeps the doubles. Horns have higher ranked player in 3 of 6 singles matches, lower in one and two singles matches pit unranked players from both schools. Based on the earlier meeting with aggy none are gimme's. This will be a tough road to 4 points and the win. Texas up 1-0.
Corrie, Damico and Andersen all take first sets. Kutrovsky and Mladenov drop first set. Zavala up 6-5 in first set on serve.
Texas takes the first set in 4 of the singles matches. Krajicek took the first set in the #1 match against Kutrovsky though.
Zavala took first set in tiebrake. Horns up in 4 matches. On serve in all matches in set two except Mladenov who is up a break but down a set.
Mladenov takes second set. Zavala up a break in second set and up a set. All other matches on serve as they move deep into second sets. Horns lead in 4 matches, tied in 1 and trail in 1.
Damico drops second set. Kutovsky is in tie brake in second set, down a set. Zavala now up 2 breaks in second set. Horns lead in three, tied in 2, trail in 1.
Kutrovsky takes tie brake, headed to third set. Andersen up a break and serving for match now. Mladenov now up a break in the third set.
Damico drops second set headed to third. Mladenov up 2 breaks and Corrie up a break in the third set and Zavala still up two breaks in second set. Horns have won 1, lead in 1, tied in 4 but up breaks in 2 of those on serve in other two.
Get the champagne ready. Mladenov up 5-0 in third set. Zavala up 5-1 in second set after winning the first. Trophy is coming back to Austin.
Though they might not end up mattering in the team competition, both Kutrovsky and Corrie are now up breaks in the third.
I will be happy when we get this for a couple of reasons. I don't really give a **** about the Lonestar thing. Even when we won it, meh. I just like beating aggy and we do so often in the past it is expected. But you guys, the ones that care about the trophy go to the trouble of updating us, breaking down matches and keeping the bystanders like me more informed. I am stoked for Horns wins, shutting aggy up and very much so that you guys are going to have a fantastic night celebrating this. You guys deserve it too!
The nice thing about the LSS is it does cause some of us to pay attention to sports we might not otherwise. I was already a huge tennis and volleyball fan (in addition to the big 3 i mean of course) but with the LSS I now pay more attention to sports that in the past were just a passing glance. BTW Kutrovsky now up two breaks in the third. Kutrovsky's aggy opponent is ranked 6th nationally so this would be a great win for Dimitar.
I hear ya. I work on campus and get to know many of the athletes so I go to a lot of things from time to time so I can't forget about the other sports. I still contend that Volleyball is possibly the best event to attend on campus and every student should go at least once. It is so much fun! I also like the Women's sports for the fans. If the Men's baseball and basketball fans were 1/2 as amped up and fun as the ladies fans it would be awesome! Can you imagine the Disch with the activity and fun of a softball game? I am happy for all concerned. Bill will be doing some driving around town with his flag on the car for sure.
